Is there a pinion depth measurement list available?

Does anyone know of a source listing pinion depth measurements for the more common differentials (Ford, GM, Mopar, ect) other than searching for individual overhaul manuals for each application? I realize gear pattern has the last say but a starting point would be nice for those "basket cases" that come my way from time to time. Thanks. Jay

12 bolt chevy about .035 will get you started well.

    10 bolt 8.5 usually a bit higher at .038

10 bolt 8.2 usuall a bit less to start .032 ish.

If you have an original shim use it first...That is always the best start.

The whole reson for a shim is the housings cast imperfections. So the shim in the housing with the factory gear will always be the best start. To generalize a depth shim for every rear is totally impossible. You may have a loopy one in the mix that will be way off like .028...??? Just happens sometimes.

The gear manufacturer is another HUGE factor. BUY cheapo gears and you will have a big guessing game with out a depth gage indicator. It can be done but will just take more labor and time of course. The figures I gave are the average of what IU have done. I can not give you ford or Mopar because I just do not do enough to give a good guess. Like I said if I have the original shim form that housings gears set that was set-up correct from the factory...Go with it first. They work the pattern from there.

Good luck and if you have trouble or need guidence visit me at jdrace.com of one line help on setting the rear up. Jim
