Is there any way at all possible to get a car with a salvaged title to get a copy or anything to "re-title" it again after being salvaged? Sounds like a dumb question but I really dont know. I hope so, there are some cars in some junkyards that are worth saving and it would suck if it had a salvaged title and could not clear it and get a different(copy) one. Thanks

If its a classic or antique it can be done. There are several companies that can launder VIN numbers thru auctioneers. Totally legal.

  4. iowa is a bit easier than other states
go to the dmv and ask for a retitle
they will have you fill out forms
car will need to be inspected for safty
    and in wisconsin here
it costs about $150 for that process
you may go to a body shop that deals in builders as well,
they seem to have insite on what to do to push it along as well
    good luck

Keep all receipts that you got from the new parts you have put on the car. If you have any used parts, you will need to have the VIN off the car that you got the parts from. They do this to slow down the spread of stolen parts, and make it harder to chop cars here in Iowa.
Get the car road worthy BEFORE you have the DOT inspect it. You can call them and ask what location to take the car in your area. It must be driveable and safe! Some places are more "by the book" than others, but be prepared to show receipts from used and new parts.
If the car is now titled as Salvage, then after the inspection it will have the words "Prior-Salvage" in the upper right corner. If the car is titled as "Junk" then the car can not be retitled.
Obtaining a "clean" title by any other means is NOT legal in Iowa and if caught constitutes fraud.
I deal with this almost every day. Do it right and you won't have to look back...... take a shortcut and somewhere down the line it will come back to haunt you. If you are going to keep the car, it won't matter if it's a "Prior-Salvage" title or not anyways.

No legal way to do it in NY, for title year cars. Cars built prior to title years, no problem since the registration is the title. I've heard it can be done by having it titled in more lenient states and then bringing it back to NY. Heard PA is a good state for this type of thing.

What kind of car are we talking about here?

  8. Cody, check out this thread for information on the matter:

Short answer: tricky, but possible. Anything after 70's usually cannot be cleaned by any service since pretty much all states went to uniform salvage classifications.

    Title for salvage automobile

It IS possible to register a salvaged vehicle in New York State. 1973 and newer vehicles are titled and can not be transfered without the title. 1972 and older vehicles just have transferable registration cards. The salvage yard gives you a salvage certificate along with the registration card or title. Motor vehicle will run the VIN to be sure the car was not stolen or involved in a crime. If VIN is clear, a new title or registration will be issued. You will also need to prove the vehicle passed a New York State motor vehicle inspection.

And you will get a title that says "Salvage Vehicle".
