Just got done servicing my daughter's horse trailer and making sure it's fit for duty. This was the absolute worst condition of the bearings and grease that I have seen in my over 50 years of working on cars etc.. Upon removing the bearing caps the grease was so broken down it oozed out like oil. It smelled terrible as well and was really difficult to remove from the hubs and bearings. I thought the driver side was really bad, until I tackled the passenger side. I was stunned that the Chinesium bearings are still good yet. I soaked them for a good long time till they were able to spin freely. I pumped the grease fittings on the end of the spindle till actual grease looking substance came out. Fortunately, the brakes are still good, but Sarah want's to replace them this summer. Sarah bought this trailer ready to go and fully serviced. She used it a handful of times. Now, it has synthetic bearing greased packed into the bearings and in the spindle. I used a super sized roll of paper towels,1 can of choke cleaner, and 1 can brake cleaner.. Took me over 4 hours to get them bac to good.. I have 3 other trailers of my own to start in the coming weeks..I do it annually..Just a reminder for everyone, since it's going to be tow time to car events..
Thanks for the reminder, Pat. Do you have bearing buddies on any of yours? Just curious I do need to check a few trailers as well. Tony
I only have them on my landscape trailer. My enclosed car trailer and open car hauler do not. But, I maintenance those every April,or they don't get used till they are.
