While timing the beast, I went to start it and the key just spins to run position( not all the way around) key goes in and I can feel lock tumblers. I just feels like some thing come loose, then I notice even whith the keyoff the GEN light is on, can anyone help a green horn with a 72 GS?

    Thanks bunches

    GStage1 Always looking for parts!

Check the ignition switch on top of the column, below the speedo. Your return spring may have broken. You can start your car once you remove the switch from the column, just leave the wiring harness connected and use a small screwdriver or scriber to slide the switch plate down. The switch is held on the column by two 5/16" hex head screws. You may have to remove the column cover, lower driver's ac duct and steering column to access the screws.

If you still have the problem after checking the return spring like George posted.
Remove the ignition lock from the steering column check the part on the back of the lock(might be cracked) If the lock is good then your problem is in the column. Most likely the teeth on the sector gear are damaged or you have a broken rack.
The sector gear operates the rack.
If you have a broken rack, unfortunately it's to involved for me to post the instructions for you to do it yourself.

    YEP it's the rack

I pulled it apart to see and it is broke just below where the mechanism is.Is it two pieces or one? rack and rod each separate or one piece. It is a tilt column, i'm not sure how to get the rod out! the sevice manual doesn't show anything that I can find. Neither does chilton or motors. I could really use the help, also I'm gonna need a new part. would it be easier to replace the column?
    Thanks,
    jerry :(

Yes you will need new parts, there cheep, replacing a rack is not really a do it your self job.
I'm sure you can find a tilt replacment, call around get prices for repairing and an replacment. Call locksmiths and auto repair shops in your area.

If the prices are to high, ship me the colunm we do rack work.My Lockmith shop is in SW Fla. You pick up the shipping cost,I'll replace the rack for $55.00 incls new part, labor, plus tax.Once we get the colunm it will be shipped out 1 to 2 days.

Let me know if i can help.... Good Luck
