1970 Skylark Custom convertible. Going to install a RetroSound radio and looking for speaker options. RetroSound makes kick panel speaker but they stick out 2 inches. My emergency brake pedal is closer to the kicker panel than 2 inches. Any other options?
Two 3-1/2" or 4" modern dash speakers mounted side x side in the orig front dash speaker spot. I used Cadillac speakers with 6 x 9's in rear shelf. They kick it out! Don't cut up your kickpanels.
I used the Custom Autosound Speaker kick panels with I believe Pioneer speakers. Yes the speaker grilles are very close to the emergency brake pedal. Never had to use the EB, but I am sure I could if I needed to. I only have a picture of the passenger side, but I can take one of the driver's side if you need to see.
I went out to the garage and took a picture. It would definitely hit the grill and push it off. The only solution is to bend the EB Pedal a bit. Not a big deal to me, but some may mind. There are limitations to the design. You have to use shallow speakers as there isn't that much room back there to begin with. No vent controls, it's an A/C car.
I can give you a good deal on the kick panels from my '69, which has the vent controls (non-A/C car). The previous owner kindly cut speaker holes in them for me. I now have uncut ones, thanks to a forum member, so I don't need my "holy" ones anymore.
Long story, but it worked great. I have a 1968 GS 400 convertible. I think I was looking at Year One’s catalog. They’re kick panel speaker option was expensive, but in their description they told the two speakers that they use because they’re very thin and fit well. I believe the two speakers were Xfinity and kickers. I believe 6 X 6. Then the cheap person I am, I went to Amazon and ordered the kick panels all by themselves with the speaker cut outs in them. I don’t remember the sight on Amazon. But I do know they were the cheapest. I went to Crutchfield and ordered the speakers. They’re cheap there. I also ordered the same infinity speakers but 6 x 9 for the back of the car. There are two places in the back behind the seat of a convertible that look like a 6 x 9 will fit in them. It doesn’t. I took a saws all and cut just a little bit out of the center and then they fit. I mounted the 6 x 9 speakers backwards. I don’t know why. My older son told me too. We hooked it up to a 400W amplifier, got a phone hooked up to it for Bluetooth. I personally think it sounds awesome and screams!!! I can hear the stereo no matter where I go. At highway speed’s it’s not as loud but what do you expect with the top down. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
I met your gf Mart. She didn't seem high maintenance to me. Tell her she has to remove the pumps when in the car.
Yep. I'll tell her you said that. She really hates the smell from the 35* overlap cam. I never hear the end of that one. I don't go completely for the "correct" but more for clean, non noticeable interior mods. I have never been a fan of cutting holes in door or kickpanels for speakers. But that's just me.
Hahh-Ha, what are the consequences of that for me?. You might get in trouble though. Woman always complain about the exhaust noise and stink, that's a given. I didn't cut any holes. I still have the carpeted original kick panels. Completely reversible.
My wife will not ride in my GS - too noisy (mufflers), stinks (not anymore after new headliner 20 yrs ago), rides too hard (F41 + hd springs). So I told her to drive her own car!
I have kick panel speakers and a tig welder. Mod'd the emerg brake pedal, both the arm and removed then cheated the pedal itself a bit inboard
