I just replaced both front hubs* on my '64 Riviera. Now when I brake I get a knocking which I can hear and also feel through the brake pedal. This comes from the drivers side only. I took the hub off again and checked the inside to make sure there wasn't any corrosion or rust lumps - nothing. What could be causing this? Could the hub be warped? This only happens on braking and didn't happen on the previous hub. The car still brakes ok but obviously I don't want to leave this alone. All bearings/assembly are fine, cleaned and regreased. Shoes are smooth with no marks or signs of deterioration. I've checked everything twice too. *Sorry, meant to write drums
I'd have the drum installed on a brake lathe and inspected. It may just need to be cut. I don't know if it still happens but I remember buying new drums back in the 80's that had to be cut before installing. And yes, I found that out the hard way.
loose bolt somewhere? I had a couple loosen up on me that hold all that together down there. i caught it before anything bad happened. Double check all your bolts
Yep. That did it. Had both drums lathed ($30/pair). Also went to NAPA and bought some new shoes ($20 as opposed to the $75 the shop wanted) and had them fit them. Now everything rolls smooth and the brakes are ten times more responsive.
