Hi guys I am having a charging problem with my JD 111 with briggs &stratton 11hp motor i have replaced the stator and that didn't help. here's what i have done so far i borrowed a fluke meter from work and tested the volts from the battery with it unhooked i got 12.6.then i hooked the battery back up and got a 12.55 reading.then i started the mower up and the volts drop to 11.8 .then i unhook the stator and the volts will go back to 12.55.i have checked the ground wire for a good contact and continuityi also checked the rest of the wires for continuity.so i guess i am a little stumped and looking for a little help.thanks

Check the stator. Make sure its 'good"

Remember the monster garage episode that it took 3 new mower starter's to find a good one for the mustang mower project?

Todd.....it's hard to say for sure without actually seeing what you have, but there must be a rectifier connected to the stator somewhere. My guess is that the diode in the rectifier is shorted, and loading down the battery. Some tractors use an elaborate voltage regulator kind of thing, and others just use a simple diode. It can be either attached to the engine or attached somewhere on the tractor. If the voltage goes back up with the stator unplugged, that has to be the problem. Basically, it works like this: The stator generates AC, and the battery needs DC in order to charge. The diode converts the ac into dc, if it's shorted it will load down the circuit. Do you have a manual or could you post a photo of the wiring? :Do No:
