I've been dealing with some-what lack luster performance at WOT and hesitation. I searched and read the threads on how to adjust the air valve spring. So I start looking at this thing and, hmmm...how do the air valves open? Looks like I have some linkage missing. What do I need to buy? This QJet was purchased a few years back.

You're missing the choke pull-off/vacuum break and linkage that allows the secondary air valves to open at a controlled rate to prevent the dreaded "bog".

thanks. can anyone post a close up photo of theirs so i can see the linkage and how everything connects? do you think NAPA still carries these parts, if not where can i get them?

one more question, how exactly do those secondary flaps open? just by force of air? after thinking about this a bit more, it seems the choke pull off/vacuum brake just keeps them from flaping open quickly. so, if it was missing like mine is, the flaps would still open but would open much too quickly and bog, is this correct?

Correct, unless the secondary air valve spring is wound tight in an attempt to compensate (a no-no).

Nothing on that carb is correct for a 70-74 Buick Qjet . The picture shown above shows only one vacuum your has none. A buick should have a bracket with TWO vacuums on it. You need an entire bracket with a linkge rod. First tell us what part number is on that carb so you are not chasing a dead horse.

Ryan, the straight up vent pipe on your carb tells me it is not a correct carb for a 70-74 Buick. A Buick will have a slashed cut vent pipe in front of carb.

Something I also see missing is the choke coil used to open the choke. If the choke does not open all the way, the secondaries will never work. It appears to me that the heat passage in the intake is covered, and the couil used to open the choke is missing. The other posters are correct regarding the vintage of the carb. It appears to me that it is a late sixties unit. Ray

    Dave,

A "slashed cut vent pipe" is for a 455 carb. A 350 Buick 70-74 carb will have a straight tube.

Based on the hose clamp I see at the inlet, I assume you have a rubber hose feeding the carb from the pump. This is a disaster waiting for a good chance to ruin your day and your car. Please buy a metal inlet tube that runs from the pump to the carb. They cost $20-25 for a repro or bend your own for less if you have the tool (double flaring tool).
