I have a 74 Apollo 350. Recently I've been getting a lifter tap. Sometimes it taps, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes it will only do it under acceleration, sometimes all the time, sometimes it doesn't do it at all. I had the problem once before so I put a can of Gunk motor flush in the crankcase, let it run for about 5-10min., then changed the oil. That worked for a little while, but the tap is back again. I guess I'll try flushing the motor again, but I want to know if there's any other way to prevent this from happening? It seems that something is building up in the motor. BTW, I never had that problem until I put Lucas oil stabilizer in after one oil change. I think that stuff really F****d something up! Thanks for your help
Lifter noise and Buick V8's kinda go hand and hand. Use Rislone to try and keep thing from getting sticky.
Chris, I never heard that name before. (But, as you know I'm from Sweden.) What does this thing do (and how do you use it) and who makes it? I got a friend with a none Buick, but with lifter noise that comes back "to soon" It shuts up for a while after each oil change Lars
rislone chris; i have a can of rislone on a shelf at home . i remember my dad using rislone in the blue flame 6 cylinder in his 1954 chev . these engines (235 ci ?) were noted for sticky valves (lifters) . seemed to work for awhile .
Can anyone remember where you can get Rislone? Does the Ricer's Friend (a.k.a. Pep Boys) carry it?? Thanks for your help. :TU:
rislone according to "GOOGLE.COM" , partsamerica carries it. i would imagine that napa , pep boys, etc. , all carry it . since i am canadian , i bought mine 3 years ago from canadian tire corp .
Try This I like Marvel Mystery Oil, run it for a while, then change oil, use a high quality straight 30 weight ( most automotive engineers do not use a multi-grade), then add GM EOS (Engine Oil Supplement) from most any GM Dealership, it's the best additive made. Buick engineers use it.
Rislone is available at any decent parts store. My GN had a sticky valvespring and a little lifter tap and that cleans things up nicely.
I'll have to go check Pep Boys today. I've tryed Marvel Mystery Oil before, and it didn't do anything. Some people said to put it in the crank case to clean things up....that didn't do anything. And some said to squirt it into the carb......but all that did was smoke. So far the best results have been from Gunk Engine flush. I'll try that Rislone next. Thanks for all your help. :TU:
MMM helped on a high-mileage 350 engine I had in a '73 GS. If your lifters are too far gone, you may have to replace them as a last resort. You might try torquing down your rocker arm shafts. I wonder what your lifters look like inside, it's hard to get dirt out once it's inside, could they be taken apart and cleaned? Some old timers may have done this, if anyone has, let us know. In my old '65 Buick Chassis Manual it shows this procedure.
Rebuilt lifters when I was 16 Y.O. with no$ Worked for the "Second" 100,00 miles.(Lots of work, cheaper to buy new.) Try using one quart of tranny fluid with your next oil change (Simmilar to Rislone, Higher Detergent properties) Do not forget to Change your oil filter "More Often" than the oil. The "Motor-flush" Has loosened alot of sludge/Etc. It "Is" Still, Working.
