is there any aftermarket lifters that don't bleed off? I am having an issue witwhen the engine warms up to 180, and the oil thin, you can start to hear a bit of valvetrain noise. its not bad just some ticking, it has been doing this for the whole 2 years it has been together. i took the vavle cover off, pressed on the backs of the rocker arms but the most i can move them is .010 off the vavle. if you give the engine some gas the noise appears to go away. is this do to it getting more oil pressure? i have a crower cam, 234 intake, 245 exhaust @.050. .517 lift. they are the crower lifters, it came as a kit, Is this hurting anything, at idle like this, is this a problem? i know they make rhodes lifters that are made to do this and thye sound about 10 times noiser than what i have. thanks, bryan
Couple thoughts besides oil pressure How are your rocker arms and shafts? I've broken a shaft during normnal use and arms can wear out How are your valve keepers? I had three pair fail and each valve was being beaten through the keepers. I'm amazed i didn't drop a valve. My tips were even with the keepers! How are the pushrods? Is a tip flattened or is a rod bent? is one plugged up? Same for valves. Are all your tips at approximately the same height? A low onw could inducate valve trouble Is this just a little valve clatter? Like 16 little hammers when you floor it on the highway?
Every 455 I have had did this with more than a stock cam, I could never find out why so I just call it the Buick rattle. I have noticed that it gets better with miles and if I have the pushrods out and don't get them back in the same place they were running the rattle is much worse. They must wear into the rocker arm. I have had the noise with rollers and good stock rockers. I have never broke anything so it must not be a major problem. Mine rattles the most when warmed up at about 1200 to 1300 rpm, It sounds like a solid cam with to much clearence. It can sit for a month and when I start it there is no lifter tick till oil pressure builds so lifters must not be draining down. I know this don't help but I would also like to know what the noise is from. I sometimes wonder if its the dual springs that make the noise. Springs are about the only thing I have not changed to see if noise goes away. I tried 3 different sets of lifters and all make the same noise. Or maybe the push rod length is wrong so rockers are not running on the valve just right. I am just guessing here. Tom
Lifters need to be disassembled and cleaned, especailly new ones. QC is not what it used to be and trash is being found inside brand new lifters.
Front cam bearing Never overlook the front cam bearing. When it starts to go you loose oil pressuer to the drivers side lifters and pushrods. The oil is feed to that whole side just from that front bearing feed. A hot street cam and a high pressure oil pump put a lot of pressure on that bearing and in stock form and configuration they can go fast.
i had a problem with 2 different set of lifters where the would bleed off so fast the the car would not start i broke two flywheels. I switched to comp cam lifters and have not had a problem since. be careful not to use small block chevy lifters
The ONLY reason to not do this is because the cup in the Chevy lifter is deeper than in the Buick lifter, so your pushrods will be too short. What you can do is buy a pushrod "measurement" tool from TA, measure the length of the pushrods you need and then buy them from TA. They have an assortment.
Hi Rev Lifters How about the poston Hi rev lifters. I have heard they are the best lifter to use in the buick motor with a more than stock camshaft and they do not make any noise. I sure hope so because i have a set on the way. :TU:
I had a set of Poston hi rev lifters in my 462 with a postons 113A cam and they were fine, no noise ever. Mike D.
