go with ES12A its colder than r12 and uses a lot less. you need to put the r134 seals on the compressor but thats all. i redid my system for $50 . $40 for the es12a and 4 cans of freon and then $10 for the r134 seals.

Hope you fellows are aware that you need EPA certification 609 to purchase or sell R12. The seller must maintain a record of who he sold it to and how much he sold. The fines are staggering, from $10,000 to $100,000. Don't forget that the EPA is not government funded. They are supported by these outrageous fines, and are very aggressive. They even have a finders fee if someone drops a dime on you and are convicted.
But not to worry. Getting your 609 is easy. Go to http://www.epatest.com/manual609.html for more info.

    I'd like so too

I could use some too I came up short when I polished off my last 30lbs. I only need 3 or 4 lbs for now but would take a 30. If the price is right.

I don't know where you get your info from, but: r12 provides the coldest temps. all things being equal. es 12a is a hydrocarbon containing dimethyl methane and methylethyl methane a highly flamable mixture. It has a smaller molecular structure than r12 thereby passing thru your hoses. r12 systems did not use barrier type hoses. It is also illegal to install 12a in a r12 system, period. Here is a list of some states that ban HCs because of the obvious.

Arkansas, Arizona, Connecticut, Florida, Idaho, Iowa, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Maryland, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, and the District of Columbia.

HCs are also a poor transporter of oil. This is what lubricates your compressor.
The more the HCs break down the less lube your compressor gets. This is why these kits are known as black death kits. The compressor is now circulating debris through out the system, due to accelerated wear. This will give you a chance to spend some really big bucks or go without air. Every component in the system has to be replaced except possibly the evaporator, which can be flushed, when a failure of this type occurs.

Now, if you have a 134 system and charged it with 12a (or any other automotive refrigerant) without first evacuating it that would be illegal also. No mixing of refrigerants.

My opinion; Take your car to an A/C pro (get reccomendations) Have him evacuate and flush the system. Add propper amount of oil (mineral for r12) and charge into a vacuum. Pay me now or pay me larger later.

We banned CFC's a few years ago. You now have to convert the system to R134a They were selling R12 at $40 a pound before the replacement.
I have read that some substitutes can break down after a few months and are not compatable with mineral oil. The second links' product is 98% 134 and should be compatable.

I would be very carefull on the EPA also.

    Freeze 12

Is a blend of 80% 134a and 20% 142b. Your system best be retro fitted for 134a or your compressor will toast out. You cannot top off your system with freeze 12 because after some use you do not know what the ratio of the blend is. System must be evacuated then re charged. These guys are trying to sell product, and will tell you anything. What they don't tell you is that the A/C tech will not evac. into his existing 134 or r12 re cycle cans as that would be adding a blend, which is against the law. What you have to do is notify the makers of freeze 12 and get a re cycle kit from them and ship it back to them. Or vent it to the atmosphere, which again is illegal.

Why do so many people go thru so much monkey motion?
Stick with your straight r12 or 134a and be done with it. Your A/C system will love you for it and you will have fewer problems. And by the way. You do not have to convert to 134a. It's not mandate. You can keep your r12 system as long as there is supply of it. On both my cars that use r12 I get around 42* vent temps, 85* ambient.

I just put a new compressor on my daily driver and my mechanic told me it would hold 3.75 lbs of r12. I had an old 30# bottle but it came up short a couple lbs. he disconnected the unit so it would not run until i could find some more r12.
