Help, I am trying to clean up a mess of wires the previous owner modified. I was reading in the service manual that the generator I have is an A/C model and that I need to run a seperate ground wire from the regulator to the generator. the problem I have is that the bolt on the generator is missing and I have no idea what size it is.

Does anyone know what size threads and length bolt I need. It is not the 2 posts on the end there is a 3rd wire that grounds to the body and that is the bolt I need.

    any help would be great.:TU:

I don't know if, my 55 non A/C would be the same as your 60 A/C. But, i'll check tomorrow and let you know tomorrow night. Now, tell me which bolt. I'm not sure which bolt; you speak of...............
Maybe, when I look at mine I'll get what your saying.

There is a 14ga yellow wire that goes from that screw (Ground) to the ground screw on the voltage regulator. At least that is the case with the 1957's. I think that is a 1/4NC x 1/2 long screw with a slotted head. It might be a #12Nc screw. I will check that and reply again. - Dan

iirc, it's 1/4-20 and pretty damn short, like a 1/4 inch of threads. Stick a screwdriver in and gauge the depth. You don't want to lock up the armature.

Yes it is very short. Mine is a hex head.

It should be a slotted screw like his picture, yes it is short. You can use the solenoid mounting screw from any older oem GM starter, just add a 1/4 in lockwasher.

Attached thumbnail taken from a junk generator and is a Fillister Head slotted, 1/4-28UNF x 7/16 Lg with lock washer.

I just, looked at the spare generator I have. And, it has the slotted head. I'm sure you are right. The slotted head is correct.

thanks, i tried a 1/4"x20 and it wouldn't thread in. Thanks a lot!

With the A/c lines and some kind of heater mechanism on that side I have a hard time reaching that location with my hand much less trying to fit bolts.

    I appreciate the help!:TU:

some gens had slotted screws and some had bolts. Either way they are 1/4 28 threads. If it is too long, you won't damage the armature, but you may ruin the fields, so be careful. I have a bolt for it or a screw if you need it. The bolt is a collector bolt with the RBW logo on it. Kind of rare. Whatever don't have more than 3/8 inch of threads going into gen case. The bolts are 1/2 inch with a lock washer taking up 1/8 inch of legnth.

I'm glad you posted, that. \ I got to thinking; was, it too long? I went and, pulled it out. To make sure. And, it is; the correct length.
I was, scratching my head. Wondering; where, did that bolt, come from?

thanks for the help, I had to try 3 stores to find a 28 thread bolt but it didn't need to be anything special. I used a bolt head and cut it to 3/8".

    Worked great, thanks again!
