Need a picture from a 71-72 assembly manual of the 455 engine pulley and bracket setup and part numbers.

I have a 70 assembly manual for my 70 GS but my motor is a 76 block using the long nose water pump and later pulleys. I want to verify the pulley part numbers.

    Thanks
    Nick

Thanks for the info… What is the part number for the Alternator pulley and is the power steering pulley 1235776?

Yes the power steering pulley is 1235776. The alternator pulleys are not called out, but are part of the alternator assembly, however I believe the 1971- 72"double space" alt pulley is number 1852856, and that is a different part number for a 1970 car.

If you are looking for the single space 1971-72 pulley, I can't help you as I do not have that part number.

    Hey Duane,

Thanks for the info…I wanted to see if there was a difference between 70 and 71. I know there is the whole long nose short nose water pump, but wasn’t sure if there was any diameter difference with the pulley’s.

I do have the long nose pump with the 71 crank and water pump pulleys. But my power steering and alternator are 70 vintage parts. It all appears to line up, I was more wondering of the diameter of those two pulleys between 70 and 71.

Diameter of 70 alternator pulley is bigger than a 71 and spacer in middle is different. Depth of other pulleys between the two years are different. That is more of an issue than diameter. Mixing and matching years can be a huge problem

70 double alternator pulley is 1961408

Thanks for the info. Sorry for all the questions. What is the 71 double pulley on the alternator part number? Is the 71 pulley the same for the 350 and 455 motors as it is for the 70 year? What is the diameter of the 70 and 71 pulleys? Would a 71 pulley fit on a 70 alternator?

Thanks for the info. Sorry for all the questions. What is the 71 double pulley on the alternator part number?
I gave you the alt pulley part number above. If you are asking for the alternator part number then it is on the page I posted and is the 55 amp alt.

Is the 71 pulley the same for the 350 and 455 motors as it is for the 70 year?
It might be. That pulley was used on the 55 Amp alternators.

What is the diameter of the 70 and 71 pulleys?
I don't know, but the 71-72 double pulley is a little bit smaller.

    Would a 71 pulley fit on a 70 alternator?
    Yes.

The space between the 2 different pulleys is almost the same.

From all these questions it shows you are not comfortable with all of this.

I see 2 different scenarios you could pick from.
    1. Throw it all together and see if it starts throwing belts. With all this "mix & matching" going on you will probably have to hand select belts that will work. You will also need to check how it cools.

    2. Pick a year, find all the right pieces, and get the job done.

    Nick,
You have not even asked the most important question here. What fan shroud and fan are you using? As that answer should determine which year set-up you use. I wrote up a short article listing all the different part numbers for those pieces and the rubber radiator spacers. Plus I explained how the fan and radiator gets "shifted" regarding the fan shroud (front to back) and can cause problems with cooling.

Hey Duane. Thanks! I missed the part number above. My brain is definitely overflowing. :)

Looks like I might need to find a 71-72 pulley.

I read your article on the cooling parts. Good stuff. I have 71 shroud, 72 top plate, 71-72 radiator bushings and larger diameter fan to fit.

No clue what alternator is currently (possible an auto parts store aftermarket special with a single pulley) on the car but recently acquired a correct date code 70 with a double pulley.

Looks like you have everything just about figured out. There is a guy out west selling a 71 55amp alt with the correct 71-72 2-place pulley. You could contact him, maybe he has an extra one.
