Another long time friend and Buick buddy called me with news of the passing of Greg.

If you were into Buicks from 1982 to 2002ish, I will about guarantee your path crossed with this man. He frequented Bowling Green's swap meet area, BCA shows, and just about any other event south of the Mason-Dixon and east of the Mississippi. A Virginia mountain man through and through, he spoke softly and always wore a smile on his face. Coal country is not an easy place to make a living and Greg, a long time employee of Dotson Chevrolet Oldsmobile in Big Stone Gap, found himself behind a GM parts counter for many years. He never tried to eek out every last dime on the rare stuff he'd come across as he searched endlessly for the last of the last NOS. Instead, he considered it a means to an end, vending to meet Buick people and putting a little aside for his black '67 GS400 he so cherished. Later in life, he finally threw in the towel on owning a Buick, mostly because it was so expensive. He began collecting the big stereo systems from the late 70s to early 80s. Greg called this the "musclecar era" for the stereo system.

The two best times I shared with this man were both at Bristol. We were avid Earnhardt fans, and Greg and I were at what some consider the second best Nascar race of all time in August 1995, when Earnhardt pushed Labonte across the finish line to come in second. Some years later, we found ourselves blasting around the banks of Bristol at a musclecar meet in my 1973 Stage 1, my headers scraping coming out of the turns and doing all we could to keep up with the pace car. Of course we were laughing the entire time.

Greg was a large man with an even bigger spirit. He loved God and family. Health problems haunted Greg for years. The last phone call I had with him the Doctor wanted to operate, but insisted Greg lose weight before the surgery. Greg must have been in worse shape than he led on, and I am saddened that I didn't get to have a visit with my old friend. Hopefully, he was comforted by local friends and family. Godspeed Greg

Greg always had an upbeat lookout on life - no matter what personal obstacles stood in the way. We lost another great ambassador for our beloved Buicks.
