Just bougt a 60 buick electra and it dosent have the key. I have the original title with the key number on it. Is there anywhere I can get a key cut using thais number? Thanks ed
Not sure about that, but I have had keys made by taking a lock cylinder to a locksmith. I didn't have a trunk key for my Riviera, so I took the lock cylinder from the glove box to a locksmith and left it with him. He made a key from that.
The locksmiths here have a big thick book that they look up the key codes. The book then lists the cuts that need to be made, then they cut the keys. I have had several done. The codes are on some of the lock cylinders also, so they can use those as Dale said, it would be the same code. And additionally a good locksmith can take the locks, which you carry in to him that were removed from your car, take them apart and make keys to fit. A good one can make keys sometimes without taking the locks apart nor having codes but it takes longer. Using the codes to make keys is good because, when you have a key made from an old used key you get an exact copy, and keys do wear, so you have copys of worn keys. Using codes should get you factory fresh keys with no wear. We had an old locksmith, now deceased, who could come to your house with a few files and some key blanks and make keys when you had lost them. I saw him do this more than once at a retail store where I worked for many years for customers who lost their car keys. Probably a lot easier on the old cars from that time as that was several years back. He could get into most anything, very talented.
Mike I can't get the cylinder out that is my problem. I bought a new cylinder with keys and then found out I can't get the cylinder out. Any suggestions? Thanks Ed
Get the manual and look for the lock cylinder. It will show you how to remove it. Ususly cheeper to replace than have a locksmith do the work Good luck and Welcome from MN
Try another key first. You may get lucky. My 67 Skylark ignition key works in my 67 GS400. And brothers 72 Challenger key fit my wifes past 89 Eagle Vista. Ray
I believe you need the key to get the cylinder out. IIRC, you insert the key, push a paper clip into the small hole on the face of the clyinder, turn key and pull the cylinder out.
I'm easily confused, but I thought you had the codes? The way to get the cylinder out which I am familiar with you would need a key. You disconnect the battery, put the key in the ignition and turn to the accessory position, stick a pin or very small drill bit, or a paper clip, or something similar into the tiny hole in the bezel beside the key slot, this pushes a pin in which allows you to turn the cylinder a little further to the left and it will come out of the switch. And if you have no key you may consider taking the entire assembly out of the dash, disconnecting the wires and take the entire thing to a locksmith. I hope someone knows a different/easier way, maybe there is something in a shop manual as mentioned. I call my locksmith shop and ask how to find the ignition key code, he has information in the big code book which tells where to find the codes. It will sometimes be on a glove box lock or a door or trunk lock, but you need to know which one before taking action. I am not familiar with your year Buick. Best luck, Mike
The key for the door lock should be the same for the ignition.(I think) You should be able to take that lock out and take it to a locksmith to make you a key.
Some cars ran the same lock for the ignition and the glovebox. The doors and trunk were on a second key. If that's the case then you can pull the glovebox cylinder and get the key made from that. This way you don't have to worry about someone getting into the car while the locksmith is working.
The key number on the title is 9388 The glove box cylinder is also missing so I cnt get anything off it. No lock smith in Big Sandy Montana so that is out also. Hope you can help. Thanks Ed
Ignition key code lookup in code book (thepartsman??) returns digit for each lock tumbler position (example: 2-4-3-5-1-1). Each is height of notch to be cut into blank key, starting at base. You will need correct blank and someone with key cutter...
With the code you should be able to contact a company by telephone or internet, give them the code and get a key sent by mail. Next day service is available for about $20, priority flat rate $5 takes 3 days or so. I will even volunteer to get it done here and send it to you. Call me if you like, seven four zero 53 3 - 02 40. I called the local locksmith already, he said the code came right up. He now has a computer program to look it up and a computer controlled machine to cut the keys, he has the blanks, all you need to do is give me the word and I will help. Mike
Mike, Can you give me the number of the locksmith or get me a price with shipping and I will send it to him, or if you will help me get one give me a call Ed 406-945-5599 406-378-2146
