My friend has a 68 camaro with a built 434 stroker (dyno @ 604hp/583tq) he has a 3 link rear suspension with Ford 9" 3.89 rear gear.
He is purchasing a M22 and wants to know which gear set will give him a longer 1st gear, the 2.20 first gear or the 2.54

2:56 will be the best choice with a 3:90 rear end.

    Hi,

    A M22 has 2.20 1st gear so does a M21 (close ratio), M20 has a 2.56 or 2.54 (wide ratio). Autogear makes a M22w which has the same gear helix with a 2.54 or 2.56 can't remember.

From factory and a 3.90 ratio would come with a close ratio. 3.55 seems to be the either or on most GM vehicles.

Buick 65-66 ran a close ratio, but that was a T-10 with 3.36 in the early Gran Sports, 300 A-bodies has 3.23 and a wide ratio T-10.

Autogear is a good option vs using a well worn Muncie, they also have a few different gearing options.

    Regards,
    Jim

If your looking for a longer first gear, you'd want to go with the 2.20.

The M22w from Auto Gear is what I chose.

Small world I think I met your friend Monday while spending the day going thru my M21 with Don. He came by and was looking at a M22 that Don has available.
