Member Locations?

Is there a way to find members by location? Say for example I'm looking for regionally located members in MS, LA, AL, TN, AK. How can I find them without looking through thousands of members profiles?

I don't think it's possible to search by location.

No can do. Besides, location is not a required piece of info to register. This is just an open forum, not a club.

I realize that the info is optional so if not filled in would not be available to select on. I think the design problem is that city and state should have been separate input fields. Then for whoever put in a valid state code you could query against that value to find the members. I'd hope that a future version of the software could take this into consideration.

I doubt that JW would want to require a location field to be filled in during registration, and who's to say they would be filled in accurately? Plenty of guys don't want that info made public, for various reasons. I think it kind of goes against the grain in this day and age of trying to protect our private information. In fact, I think I'll have Jim change my user name here. Of course requiring a location for Sale ads is a different matter.

So Mike, what would your purpose be in wanting to see this? Just curiosity?

Just to find out how many people are registered from around here that may be interested in doing something.

As I said before, I don't expect location to be a required field. All I was suggesting is that if a person does put it in you could find them based on state code or even city. Then maybe PM them to try to get a BBQ or cruise in going. The broadcast method isn't very effective to contact people unless they're on here regularly. I suspect most members are not.

I understand where you're coming from, Mike. However, I think a well worded thread that we could "stick" for you would be quite effective in making contacts with other owners in your area that desired some type of gathering. As long as you weren't planning for this weekend... :) Give it a try, I'll stick the thread for you. Maybe even contact Jim directly to find out if it is even a possibility. I'd think vBulletin might not go that direction though, but it can't hurt to ask. vBulletin has their own forum too, you could probably even go right to them and inquire.

Actually I agree with MikeM that it would be a "nice to have" field(s) that a query could be run against. Members would not need to fill it if they don't want and/or a check box attached that allows other members to query against it. It is available on a Cheby board I hang out at and is a nice feature. I use it in that form to make a query and then pm other members on rare occassion to ask information about local suppliers, local events, recommendations. I sure don't mind when people from the board pm me. If I can help I do, if I don't want to reply I don't. Just food for thought on future enhancements.
