My wife and I will be driving our '69 GS California to the BPG Nats and are planning on leaving Duluth, MN Tuesday morning (8/10). We hope to be heading through the Chicago area early Tuesday afternoon, then off into Indiana looking for a place to stop for the night.

I'd really like to run the Wednesday evening street program at Quaker which means we'd have to be in Salem in the early afternoon to check-in to the Red Roof and make it to the track by 5PM or so.

How far into Indiana do I need to travel on Tuesday to make sure I hit Salem by 3PM on Wednesday? Is anyone else from the Midwest planning on a road trip into Salem for Wednesday to run the street drags?

  2. Ken, will you be coming down 35 thru the twin cities, or cutting down across Wisconsin? Is Brian traveling with you too? I'm planning to be in Salem Wednesday with my car, but don't have any specific travel plans laid out yet.

    Dave,

Looks like Brian won't be able to leave until Wednesday morning. I hate to make him drive down alone, but I'd really like to race the Wednesday street program at Quaker.

At this point we have no firm plans though we will probably drive down into Wisconsin rather than heading to Minneapolis as it will save us an hour or more of driving time. Eau Claire would be a good place to hook up with a Twin Cities caravan if there is one leaving Tuesday morning.

I'd really like to firm up some travel plans so I know how late I can work on the GS Monday night!!

  4. Eau Claire does look like a good place to meet up. I would have to leave Fargo very early Tues a.m. 4hrs for me to Mpls. Looks like another good hour to Eau Claire.

I live in Oberlin, Ohio. When I go racing at Elkart Lake Wi. it takes me 5 hours from home to Chicago. A nother 3 hours to the track. That is in a pickup pulling a 24 ft. trailer. We have found it best to just drive through the city instead of taking the bypass.
I am figuring another hour and a half to Quaker City from my house. I am 35 miles due West from Cleveland.
    Hope this helps.

Hi Guys, Just a friendly warning. I94 thru Chicago area is under major construction,as is I94 thru Indiana. Construction extends to I65. Eastbound best time to avoid major delays is morning after 6 AM. Shut down to one lane during night time hours in IND. Eastbound not so bad. Westbound is much worse. Use I294 to avoid parts of delay. Still must go thru IND.. Get on I80-90 as soon as possible. Hope this helps. JOE:cool:

  7. Thanks for the tips Joe. Sounds like the seasons here in ND... winter and construction. :(

What kind of racing do you do at Road America? I have done three motorcycle racing schools there and just love the track; you just can't beat it. Four miles and 14 corners baby! There is nothing quite like roaring up the hill to cross the finish line, let screaming down into turn five.

Have you raced there since they changed the course?

Ken, It should take you about 3.5 to 4 hours from the OH-IN border to get to Quaker. You could stop about half-way through IN for the night and have a 5-6 hour drive the next day. Remember they are 1 hour ahead, so, if you leave mid-IN by 8am, that should put you in Salem by 3pm. That's probably average. Drive safe!

Thanks for the info Ramin. Any other road construction we need to watch out for? How much can we expect to pay in toll charges??

  11. Good question... no such thing as a toll road out here. :spank:
