Mismatched carb top?

It's been suggested that this carb has a different/wrong top on it. Anyone have any ideas? I plan on rebuilding it (the little plastic "cam" that gives more fuel when the secondaries open is busted to pieces) but I don't want to end up with an oddball carb that doesn't match the parts. The carb is on an olds 455 but don't hold that against me, at least it's not in a buick.

Nothing jumps out at me other than maybe the float level is too high based on the goo around the top gasket. Is there anything you can point out that leads someone to believe it is wrong?

It came up while diagnosing my stuttering problem when going to WOT (the plastic(?) cam between the secondary valves is deteriorated/gone) and a person helping me was very convinced that the top wasn't right for the carb. Is the gasket supposed to stick out that far in pic #2? I just really wanted to make sure, I don't want to go buy a carb rebuild kit and find out after spending $$ that it's not going to have the right parts. I just got doug roe's quadrajet book the other day so I'll be using that as a guide while rebuilding.

I can't tell if thats the right top, it looks right. But at one time you could buy a kit from the dealer to fix that problem. I'll see if I can get you that part number later today.

Looks right to me - all those top gaskets stick out like that. What is the number on the carb?

:TU: Most WOT stuttering is caused by lack of fuel.. I plugged the return line on the fuel pump and it solved my problem.

Nah, it's that little cam that pushes up the hanger that the secondary metering rods rides on, cam is in pieces so no extra fuel when the secondaries open.
