OK... lemme get this straight. Stock buick bore is 4.312". Boring it over 0.038" makes it 4.350" which is the same size piston as a 0.030 over 440. Does that mean I can just buy a 0.030 over 440 piston to make a 464. Rings and Pins are the same dimensions. Is it that easy or is there more to it?

    Thanks

Totally different piston. Wrong compression height and a few other differences that make it impossible. The only reason for a .038 overbore is to get the Mopar ring size which is a much thinner ring for less drag and weight. I'm sure some of the other guys can elaborate.

i knew it couldnt have been that easy... makes sense on the rings though

Nope, sorry. The only way you could be running Mopar 440 pistons in your Buick is if you are using a custom aftermarket rod that would fit the mopar pin size and different pin height.

Again, as was stated above this post, the reason we use the .038 over bore is that there is a greater availability of top quality after market rings available for the Mopar bore size than for the Buick bore size.

Maybe somone needs to make a sticky of this statement and post it to the top, seems we answer this question more than almost any other question related to Buick 455 engines. :Smarty: Jim Burek P.A.E ENTERPRISES

Jim is correct those are Buick pistons that are .038 over. We were having BME do our pistons back then. They utilize a mopar ring pack we prefer to do it that way do to the many styles of rings available. We could most likely have anything made we like, we build machines for Hastings piston ring so we have a small in there :TU: . Hard to believe that motor is five years old you might want to freshen it up in a couple years  :3gears:

Bobb and Jim, thanks for clearly that up, I thought Geof had told me they were Mopar pistons, way back when! In a couple of years, maybe 2005! As it still will run 11.30s as it did once last year in Cecill when the driver has a clue!!!!!!!! We gotta make plans for some other stuff like we talked about! I just gotta figure out which end to work on first!
