I can't believe this. First I have trouble finding fuel now I've developed some kind of miss in fourth gear (70 455, HEI, manual trans). I can run 3 gears upwards of 5,000 rpm but when I go into fourth, at about 2800 the tachs (hood and dash) start going nuts and the engine starts surging and missing. No backfiring that I can tell. Just starts surging real bad. Any ideas?
Things I've checked: Distributor shaft for looseness, hot wire to HEI cap, plug wires and timing lock down nut.

I tried that already but to no avail. It runs fine from idle to 5500 in the first 3 then shutters between 2800 and 3400 when leveled off. If I open the secondaries in 4th it pulls hard to 5000. I didn't go past that. Didn't need a ticket to round out a crap day lol. Sadly the speed limit lies in the middle of the problem range. I sure appreciate the suggestions though. Thanks Pete.

Pete, Found it. It seems while changing my alt. over to interior regulated type, I disturbed the holder for the wire leading from the starter. The wire got fairly close to the header and melted a tiny bit of insulation off. At just about 55 mph the wind whipped through just enough to get it to flap against the header and ground out the system. This is what was causing the tach to go nuts. I spent 3 hours driving home from b/g mulling over the possible cause. The tach going nuts was the thing that led me to the hot wire on the HEI. Took about 10 minutes to fix once I traced it back.
Thanks for the help. BTW B/G was AWESOME. It was like taking a tour thru God's garage.

My car doesn't have it hooked up - but I thought read on here somewhere that when in fourth gear, there was an electrical hook up from the trans or the shifting linkage to to a solenoid that keeps the RPMS at a level higher than normal idle so that when you let off on the gas pedal it would reduce backfiring. Maybe you have a bad wire or something related to this wiring if you think your problem is electrical.

opps, I guess I was too slow - glad you found the problem
