Hi all, I was wondering what Mr Sweesy's car ran at Salem? Was it still a single carb or did it have the tunnel ram setup on it. Or was the tunnel ram setup for a different car? Tom

Tunnel ram setup.....believe I saw a 9.50 dial-in on the window. I'm sure someone can provide more details.

  3. fastest run I saw was 9.49, don't know if it did any better than that. I was too busy playing to see many runs though. :)

With Jim at the controls when he ran me, he went a 9.45 at 139.76 with a 1.28 sixty foot time to my 9.44 at 140.20.

I think later in the event he nosed it down to a 9.42.

Did Jim have a idea of how much it gained going to the tunnel ram over the single carb?

Since George's car with the new setup was my toy for the weekend, it suffered the "shoemaker's Kids" syndrome.

We were so consumed with finishing everyone else's stuff, and then with an interesting road trip to get to the event, very little time was spent on it, besides dropping the motor back between the frame rails and setting up the required changes to the fuel system and the throttle linkage, and cutting the hole bigger in the hood under the scoop to fit the deal in. There was no time to seal the carbs, or even check over any of the basic stuff.

Since I am on a bit of a "working vacation" the rest of this week, trying to recover from the thrash of the last several weeks and the trip, we fussed around with it a bit yesterday. Found that the timing, even though set correctly and the dist locked down on the dyno, was 6* off.. set at 28* instead of the 34* the motor likes. And there is about 30 HP in that.. Investigating this situation, I looked at the instructions for the 7AL3 ignition box in the car, and found and insteresting note.. " This ignition control will retard the timing aproximatly 4* as compared to other MSD ignition controls."

Sure enough, the dyno has a 6AL on it.. I called up Joe Moulzolf, who I just build a STG 1 TE headed 494 so he could run Super Comp at the NHRA nationals in BIR the same weekend as the BPG nats, and he reported that he found a similar situation. His timing was also 6* different than it was on the dyno, and he also has a 7AL3 box. He was also happy to report the car ran an 8.91 @ 152 MPH, which unless I am incorrect, makes it the fastest STG 1 car around. And with a flat tappet cam no less (TA 508s) Of course, the 2500 lbs Opel that it is in has a lot to do with that.

Here is a link to a pick of Joe's car, with his son Stan driving.

In any event, we corrected George's timing, checked the ouput of the fuel pump and adjusted the pump to regulator pressure to 30 psi per instructions from Joe Radimacker at Competition Products, and will seal the hood scoop up, and get it to the track for some testing on Saturday.

I expect the car to run in the low 30's or high 20's, which is about as fast as it's gonna go at 3150 lbs.

Then it's time for a diet.. I took my shipping scale and we weighted his one piece steel front end again yesterday.. came in at 96.6 lbs..

    "Hello.. WS Racing?...."

WELL Jim if you add 750 #s to that opel i think that my 67 gs iron head stage 1 and robs c, iron head stage 1 would still out run that opel. just think how fast me and rob could run with the new t/a heads. BY the way i wont be useing them heads till i get my 67 to run 9.30s with the iron heads. BEST E.T 9.57 @ 138.90, 3250# Thats my two cents thanks. JOHN
