If you don't see one, you may have an MSD or other aftermarket distributor without vacuum advance. Can you post a picture of your distributor?

Here is a pic of my distributor.

It's right under the radiator hose in that picture. I can see the vacuum hose looping under the radiator hose. Looks like an MSD distributor. Those are nice because they have adjustable mechanical advance.

Ok I was looking for a separate vac canister. I will check the vac advance

Did it just start doing this for no reason that you know of? Did you or anyone else raise the hood for any reason before it started this? If so, what was touched while the hood was up?

    Larry,
Thanks for the tip. Vacuum advance was full of fuel. Hoping from before carb and intake were replaced which are new and not anything else I want to think about.
Going to get a new one now. I'll keep you posted. Thanks again!

    Stan,

One thing I've noticed over the years is IF the hose going to the distributor had ANY hoses eliminated & the vacuum line goes directly to the carb. you need to route the hose so that it is higher than the vacuum advance. Like routing the hose above the upper rad. hose & put a couple loops in the hose to keep the fuel in the hose.
    Just a recommendation.

There's no need to insult the ignition timing! :)

Got it back together and timed. Also put in new plugs. One other thing I discovered. The vacuum port the vacuum advance was connected to had no vacuum...
I connected my vacuum advance to another carb port that had vacuum. I will test drive hopefully soon. Raining outside now.

What is your total timing now? What is your initial timing?

Also, your carb should have one port with no vacuum at idle and one with full vacuum at idle. Your vacuum advance should be connected to the port that has no vacuum at idle. (When you touch the throttle just a little bit, this port will then have full vacuum - but if you have the wrong port then your vacuum advance cannister will see full vacuum at idle and you won't be able to set your idle timing correctly because you'll have full vacuum advance.)

Thanks Bob I didn't know that! I will check and switch it back.

Well I took it out for a test drive. Runs fine but still hot. 225-230 deg. New clutch fan coming today. I guess I'll try that next.
At least the vacuum advance is working now.

Did the new canister fill too? What would cause this?

No it didn't. Guessing it may have been from the old carb. It has a new Edelbrock carb on it. The fuel that was in the vac advance looked very old and brown.
I have had the car less than a month.

Do you have a infrared thermometer?

The car is new to you.. The IR is a very good tool to have in your front seat for a while...... It will show cool spots in the rad.. ETC...

I would buy one of those before I would spend a nickel on any thing else.....

For What Its Worth I dought its your Fan Clutch.......

If you use manifold vaccum for advance just disconnect it and plug it to set timing. If you have enough vaccum to run it at idle without fluctuation I would. There are tangible benefits. Helps my car keep cooler at idle/stop and go.

Ya me too but something changed literally overnight. Cruising Saturday night and with much stop and go it was running it's usual 190-195.
Took off Sunday morning to a car show and it's running 225.
