    i read that in 71 the hood tach was an option. not standard.

    Correct, it was part of the X package which included the Tac, Front and rear spoilers, and matte strips for about 286.00.

    Nice car! I recently added a hood tach to my 71 GSX tribute car and will be adding a front spoiler very soon.

    The WA5 GSX ornamentation package in 1971-72 only gave you rear spoiler with hood and body side stripes and emblems.That's it.
    Hood Tach ,Front spoiler ,Guages ,Body colored sport mirrors were not standard but were available options to order on 71-2 GSX cars
