my original frame bushings have these pre-shaped type washers and fit good and snug in hole ...and imo this metal to metal contact with the preshaped washer causes all that rust around our frame holes ...the rubber to metal seems better my new ones don't have the shaped washer but fit snug as well is this normal with new ones.. ????? side by side they look ok in size ...but one thing is that the new bottom bushing cup isn't as beefy as the old ones ... these new bushing I obtained from Ebay ..seems like a general/generic A body type bushing ..they all fit snugly and looks ok in size or should I obtain a better set anywhere else ...??? wheres TimR ?
never mind ....p I found TimR here....everything is making sense now .. http://members.shaw.ca/timcr/mounts.html
btw....anybody ever try these guys ....seems they have a match to the gm upper mounts # 1242761... (they say ) anybody ... http://www.oldcarstuff.com/cgi-bin/checkitout1/checkitout.cgi?oldcarstuffSTORE:CKIE:prodBM644+
Those are the same ones sold by www.oldbuickparts.com which is Cars. They even have the Cars logo on them and have the same part #. Cars sells them as part of a Core support mount kit. I used them for all locations and they are the best available I think. They are just a bit bigger in diameter than stock. DO NOT BUY The complete body mount kit from them as it is generic. The regular kit mounts are hard as hockey pucks. The ones you show have some give like original. Also buy the body mount cushions from Cars as they have the washer molded in as original. Well worth buying all these parts individually.
just ordered them from cars .....the guy was nice to deal with but trying to sell me the whole kit .... but not with these bushings... they cost almost more than double then the kit buying em individually ...but I imagine/hope you do this once and thats it I have the regular kit which just seems like generic A body stuff...they would work but I just dont like the lower insulators very soft and not stiff/thick enough imo.....the Cars lower BM644a is suppose to be beefier and the washer is molded in it I let you guys know when I get em this week ... .......... btw ..where the heck is TimR ?...he finishes his car up and vanishes ..maybe out waxing that orange thing p
btw......if anybody has pics or some nice diagram/drawing of how the core support - Frame and inner fenders all bolt up it would be appreciated .... ...I sit there and stare at my frame and core support including the inner fenders and contemplate how they all hook up and cant make sense of them bcs when I took my gs apart this area was all fiberglassed and epoxy glued up big time ...so I have no reference on it ... ...I have the manual on disc but not good enough ..
Frank i have a body chassis manual i'll let you borrow its at my parents will get it to you this week.
thanks Chris.... the bushings came in from CARS ....will check out for fit once I get home... they seem much beefier and dense/weighty like ... seem like the ticket to me they could of taken off the sticker ....p p or at least put an American flag sticker over it .. I would of slept better...
ok ....the frame bushing are good ....but I'm not sure but it seems the lower insulators might not be wide enough for the frame holes ,theres only about 1/8 of an inch all around that overlaps the hole ...a few pics to explain ...I might be wrong though when the top bushing is attached into the frame hole the bottom insulator seems like it will only overlap just a little around the frame... very little maybe 1/8 of an inch all around .....is my assumption correct ..anybody ..??
well the CARS bushings BM644 and the BM644a insulator is same size as original ones ...and thats a eye measurement bcs of having really bad bushings to check against .... But...compared to those generic A body ones you see all over... the top bushings are a bit taller (1/8) ....and the insulator are way more beefier .. I think we are good to go with the CARS bushings ...
I have used the Cars ones and wondered about the overlap as well but I used them anyway and they worked. At least made in Taiwan and not mainland commy land where they poison our pets. My brother lost both his cats probably because of their poison.
The CARS insulators seem to be same size and overlap as my originals ...or at least I think they were my originals ...they were shot shot
We can now call Frank Tai Pei Rex...You can't hardly get anything made in this hole anymore..We have become so dependent its sickening..I opted to use poly ones in my car.At least they said made in USA on them, might have fooled me though..
ou: I've been called worse.....trust me ... made in Taiwan but the quality is good for a basic type thing as these bushings.. also beware of the generic bushing set that everybody else sells for A bodies .. the washers and sleeves are usual not straight and are crooked ...beware ..all of my washers for the top bushings were .... they were out of shape and not straight .. probably ..Made in Albania or something
Yeah its funny the lower insulators don't have much overlap really, but they do crush up some so that helps. Not sure how much negative G stuff you do Frank, but better safe than sorry, right??? If anyone has NOS uppers but not the lowers Steele Rubber also sells just the lowers, very nice pieces. P/N 70-2165-48 (double check, going from memory). There are also some mid 80's stuff you can buy from GM which are much wider and work well. So at least we have some suppliers now, seems the longer you wait the easier it all gets.
G-string what ???? so Tim ..do you confirm from your bushing experience that the original insulators in our cars have a small overlap of the frame ...?
Well the Steele Rubber repros I bought were a dead match in all areas to an original except for the three vertical ribs GM ones had. Note that the original in the picture was pulled off my Stage 1 as they are still pretty nice shape (been garaged last 21 years). Whether the holes on the frames would wear at all is pretty doubtful. In fact it seemed they were designed not to deteriorate at all, on the vert several body mounts I took apart literally crumbled from the rust and rot yet the frame where they sat was fine. Go figure. Pic shows original with some yellow still on it and repro on the RH side.
If they did not overlap then they would pull right through and have no use. My originals are still in place in the rear and they overlap.
