I went to look at a Buick 455 today. Turns out to be a Olds of some sort, I picked it up anway. Olds mystery motor says 312 on the block (behind the intake on the block between the top trans bolts). On my Buick 455 it says 455 there, but there is no such thing as a 312 ci olds, right? A tough pull out of a 1 ton GM truck, not stock in the truck of course. I will post pics tomorow. Thanks, hope I didn't ofend anyone by asking a Olds question here.
according to www.442.com, no there wasn't a 312ci block but then they aren't really telling me what that might mean either. check out this page and see if it helps any: http://www.442.com/oldsfaq/ofeng.htm#Engines 1964 - 1990 edit: check the section about olds using Julian casting dates ... in other words, instead of Mar 03, 1969 olds would cast '62' because it was the 62nd day of the year. if thats what the '312' is it would mean your block was cast some time in november of some year.
It was a 60 something 1 ton dually GM, but the motor was not stock. They cut the frame a bit to make it fit. It says olds on the intake, dist in rear, oil filter in rear. I'll post my pics asap.
It's a red motor, 14 inches across intake (head to head). Sounds like a early 455 because the later ones had the pronounced 455 under the exhaust manifolds. Thanks for the help, I'll post when I know forsure.
To the left of the oil fill tube, on the block, there will be a casting number. If the last digit is a number, it's a small block Olds, if the last digit is a letter, it's a big block. The "best" you could hope for is that it ends in "F" or "Fa"--That'd be a 455.
Definitely a 73-up engine since it has EGR. Small block Olds had numbers on the heads on the #1 exh port. Big block, 455, had letters such as G, Ga, E, J, etc. visit www.442.com for decoding info
Ditto...Olds for sure. The valve covers tell all!! As George says`73 or later as it has egr.Time to check some stamp #`s.The 455 olds was in use up to`76.
I will get the #'s asap, gotta wait till the weekend to go back home. Thanks, everyone. If it is a 455 I can sell it to fix up one of my Buick motors!
