Found this for sale about an hour away. Guy thinks it came from a 61-65. I have a '60 401 that may or may not be rebuildable and an ST400. I need a flexplate anyway, so maybe I should buy this whole thing. What does this look like?
Looks like a '64-'66 engine/trans. assembly. The ONLY WAY to really tell is by the engine code stamped in front of the valley cover on the block. '64 could be 401= KT, 425= KW, 425= 2x4 KX. '65 could be LT=401, LW=425, LX=425 2x4. '66 could be MT=401, & other "M" codes. The trans. will have a tag on the right side with the year & a 2 letter code. Looks like it has been sitting outside for a number of years. Make sure it will turnover. If not more than likely scrap. I wouldn't pay more than $150.00-$300.00 for it as it MAY have some good useable parts that you could part it out & make a few $$$$. Just IMHO.
The standard online list states this to be a 64-66 401/425, but I have another list says 59-66. You need the letter/number sequence stamped on the front, just forward of the valley cover, to be sure. Should read something like LR, LT, LW, LX or MR, MT, MW, MZ 1111111
<tbody>

</tbody>
Where are you located? I'm in Jonesboro. If you don't want it I might be interested. Going to need a bare block and heads at some point for mocking up. Before you pony up any money check the block for cracks behind the starter. If it is indeed cracked it is almost worthless and your offer should reflect that.
Hey Bib, I'm just north of Dallas and will let you know what I find out. If you aren't planning to come down this way, I'll be in Paragould eventually.
Thanks Guys, The block stamping is LT, making it a '65 401. I think I'm going to try to buy it. Then I can choose the best block and go from there.
Check for cracks on the sides of the block, under the freeze plugs. You may have to remove the exhaust manifolds to see. That's a common area for freeze damage to occur. The '65 ST400 would have the switch-pitch converter too! Good luck with it.
Paragould? That rings a bell. Think we did a deal on Craigslist the other day and I delivered to your Dad at his place. Next time you are in town we have to talk over biscuits and sausage gravy.
Bib, I bought the motor and transmission, so I have one more block than I need, I just hope one of them is re-buildable. I can't seen any cracks, but I won't be tearing into it for awhile. Biscuits and gravy sound great. I don't know when you plan to start, but if I have the spare ready next time I come to see Pops I can bring it along.
Think your Dad told me you just retired or you are getting close. Will you be returning to the Jonesboro/Paragould area? Great place for gear heads. If you bring one of your motors we can pop it on a stand and take it down in an afternoon.
