The dual exhaust system on the '56 needs total revamping. When I originally had the system bent up, I chose to run glass packs, which provided a nice exhaust tone. Seeing as I am ready to make a few changes to the system (and finally pipe in the lakers) I figured it was a good time to change my muffler set up. As I said, I don't mind the glass packs, but I feel they sound somewhat cheap and tiny. I have been thinking about Flomaster 2 chamber (original 40 series) but I have never head a pair on a Nailhead. Anybody have any experience or better yet a sound clip? Also considered were "Smitty" steel packs which are deeper than the glass, but I still feel they are not agressive enough at idle. What is everybody else running on their early nailheads?

My opinion is that flowmasters do not match the era for a 50's car. They sound good, I like them, especially on muscle cars. But they do not sound right for a 50's car. I say if you want traditional sound, then smithy's are the choice. If you want it to rap more (when you let off the gas from higher rpms) put the mufflers closer to the front. It will be louder if you put the mufflers near the end, but won't rap as good. You can even straight pipe it, no mufflers with tailpipes all the way out the back. It won't be too loud until you stand on it and then it will sound good. Do not run a H-pipe, keep it pure dual exhaust, no crossover, no matter if running mufflers or not.

IMHO, whatever you decide, stay away from turbo mufflers or similar to that, it just does not have the right sound quality for your car.
