I assume those are 9 3/8" ? if so just used is the deal.

    Do you need a posi?

The higher you go numerically the more they will cost and they will be harder to find. 3.42 will be likely tops if you can find those.

If you have 2.93 stick with those. If you change it will hurt the roadability and not make that much difference on the acceleration.

Wow do you have some pictures of the rear? The diff guy wants to learn...lol... If you have time please post rear cover pictures. I will check the yards here for you. Jim

    GStage1 Always looking for parts!

I believe that rear was from 70-74...then they went to 8.5" in 75???
Hard to find and posi units are harder to find.....in all my years of yarding...I have only found 2 posi units and both had 2.93 gear sets.

    Be patient.

Man, those 9 3/8 rear ends are virtually indestructible ... I remember Dad's '73 Estate Wagon with posi handling all the slippery hills where I grew up, pulling an boat and trailer even out of the water on the boat ramp with both wheels spinning up the slimey boat ramp ... and never a whimper.

Were the rear ratios very similar or the same between the sister divisions (with the clamshell wagons)? It's a lot easier to find a Chevy clamshell than an Estate Wagon, at least in my neck-of-the-woods.

Someone get me a picture...lol. I am a visual guy once I see it ...it is in there. :)

Smartin - you saying that the wagon in the 71-77 are 10 bolt 8.5 rears? yes /No? Jim

Or are you saying they used the full size corp pontiac 10 bolt full size rear in the 1971-1977 ?

They used the 9 3/8ths rear thru the 76 model year in the full size Buicks, quite possibly in the full size Olds and Pontiacs also. I think Chevy used the 8.5 in the Impala. Mark

No, the 71+ has the 9 3/8 with a 12 bolt cover and 12 bolt ring gear.

The PRE 71 (ie. 70) had a 9 3/8 with a 10 bolt cover (looked kind of squared off) and a 12 bolt ring gear.

I am familiar with the older BUT the newer 71+ sounds like the OLDS 12 bolt full size. like this? (pictured)

Yep, Looks like the 12 bolt olds full size rear. 12 on the cover and 12 on the ring gear and a symmetrical cover gasket.

HArd to find parts. I think I have a 2.73 gear set and a posi for this rear. Jim

Originally my 1976 Estate Wagon had a 10 bolt 2.93 gears diff. Installed a 1972 12 bolt diff with 9-3/8, 2.93 gears because we're pulling a 6000 # RV. Truck scales show that we have 3760 # on the rear axle with the RV hitched up with stabilizer bars.

Need the big axle shaft ball bearings on the 12 bolt diff. The 2.93 9-3/8 gears make it tough going up some hills even though we have a 700R4 tranny. We can't pull some hills in third gear, have to shift into 2nd. Fourth gear on the flat with OD and lockup will make up for the higher gears. I'll get pictures to post.

Just do not have anything steeper than 2.73 at this time and I am betting that a steeper 3.23 3.08 3.42 will be a very tough find. Jim
