My engine somehow ingested a bolt and the problem impacted the block significantly. The engine rebuilder said he could probably repair the block but recommended I find a replacement for my own peace of mind. He was concerned about thin cylinder walls, overheating and other technical issues beyond my level of expertise. I found a seller on ebay selling a 1970 block, crank and heads for $400. The seller said the block and parts were cleaned, checked and placed in dry storage for 15 years. The block casting number is 1231738. My question: Is the 1970 1231738 block interchangeable with my 72 and is the issue of the smaller oil pick up channel 1/2" vs 5/8" a concern? Also, any recommendations of where to get a good 72 or compatible 455 block should this deal fall through?
Yes they will work with each other. You can just have the machine shop drill out the pick up passage to 5/8 and the oil hole in front of block and be good to go! Just print off JW’s thread on it and give it to them. Say here do this! lol.
You could check your local craigslist. https://richmond.craigslist.org/pts/d/richmond-1972-buick-455-engine-th400/7089660992.html I think $600 is too much to pay for a core engine, but it might be worth a look.
Jim, Is the 73 block compatible with a 72 GS 455? I saw on the Internet that casting number 1242694 works for 70-76. If it is compatible and in good shape I would be very interested if you would be willing to ship it. I will pay the shipping obviously.
I believe the blocks are compatible, but others here can answer your question better than I. Help somebody! I have no issue packing it to ship to you. I think Fastenal is a option to ship it. Jim
Good morning Bubba. My name is Paul Allen and I am one of Stuart Rolfe’s customers. I called Stuart when I found out I needed a block and asked for your number. When my engine needed to be rebuilt Stuart called you and it wasn’t a good time for you so it ended up with Lewis Barr. Stuart gave me your number I called and got no reply then texted and got a weird reply obviously not from you. Stuart gave me an incorrect number. Bottom line it would be great to get one of your blocks. My direct email is pdallen2@verizon.net. My direct email is pdallen2@verizon net
To all the responders to my post. Thank you very much for taking the time to send me a message. All your input was a big help and I appreciate it. Fortunately I was able to find a block all ready to go within 20 minutes driving time of my home for a very reasonable price which negates the need to pay shipping. Once again thanks to all and V8 Buick always comes through with good advice to solve my Buick problems. Paul
