buickdreamin I need a new old car ...

Ok guys, I need some advice on my SportWagon. My '67 was SUPPOSED to be a rust-free California car, but as you can see, it's not. The metal at the front of the sunroof openings (along with other areas) rusted out due to being packed with sand. This allowed water in that then ran on the underside of the roof, soaking the insulation and causing the rust that you see. I can fix the hole(s), but am not quite sure what to do to the underside of the roof. In addition to the rust on the bottom of the roof panel, there is rust in all of the support channels. The exposed rust I was going to scape, brush, treat with Metal Ready, and then paint with Eastwood's Rust encapsulator.

    Now, here are the questions:

    1. What do I do with the channels that I cannot get inside?
    2. What do I use to replace the insulation that was factory applied to the
    underside of the roof?
    3. Any better suggestions as how to treat the roof panel itself?

Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    Pete

    More problems - Back glass

And here is a picture of the channel between the rear glass. This channel is full of rust. I was going to clean it out using my shop vac and compressed air, but then what?

Once again, thanks for any advice.

    Hello, Hello ...

Wow, nobody has ever seen anything like this before? Am I the first to have a severe interior rust problem on my roof like this? Or maybe I'm spot on with my plan? Any suggestions would be great.

Maybe I should have put this question somewhere else? :Do No:

Check this months HOT ROD - they have a gel rust converter that sticks on upside down. It needs to be rinsed with water though...can you do that in your car? I mean is the interior out?

    Not much left.

Haven't seen the newest Hot Rod yet, I'll have to check it out.

Not much left of the interior, and what's there is pretty nasty, but I knew that going in, so getting it wet is not a problem.

Thanks for tip, anybody else want to chime in?

I have slight surface rust in the same areas as you picture ..easy clean up for me and then some Eastwood products...

in your case I would say wire brush /sand what you can reach and then sand blast the hell out of the areas you cant reach with one of those portable tanks or a sandblasting joint...be prepared for sandblasty mess though.....then treat with some rust converter and what have you...and of course prime and paint....

I am going through this -exact- same thing. California car supposed to be rust free. The interior comes off and bam! everything is brown and nasty. Where is a cheap place to get this eastwood rust encapsulator stuff? I have been sanding and grinding for a few days and it is coming pretty clean, I just dont want to put a bandaid on this problem if I can throw on some stitches.

Perhaps the mosty well Known product is POR 15. If you type in that term on a search engine it will give you dealer names. Eastwood products, I believe, are sold only by Eastwood itself over the internet or when they appear at car shows with a tent of their own products.
