Need help with my Q-Jet

I recently bought a 1972 Skylark with a 1970 Buick 455 in it. The Q-Jet that sits on top of it has some odd numbers that I have not been able to find reference to anywhere. The numbers are 29244 KA 0089. So far I have not been able to find any other numbers on it, but it is hard to see the back of it. There is a sticker on the left side just behind where the numbers are stamped.

Am I over looking something here (it's been known to happen)?

Pretend that there is a "70" sitting in front of the number. You then have 7029244 used on a 1969 Buick with 350 A/T, incidentally built on the 8th of January 1969. The omitted "70" is quite common on 1969 Q-Jets.

Thanks for the help. I was wondering if that was the case. What would the proper number be for a 1970 SF code 455 with an automatic? The engine has some other issues, and I would like to get them all straightened out before driving it very much.

You should have carb# 7040240, should be a pretty common carb. try www.blake.com/oemcarbs/ they usually have everything but are pricey. Also consider the same carb for 71 and 72 which would be 7041240 and 7042240. If you are not concerned about being absolutely matching numbers. these carbs are bigger in inside and will give you better performance. Also is car an Auto? Standard trans used a different carb. Also make sure you rejet carb for your application. Have someone rebuild it who Knows how to match for your application.

I'm very concerned with keeping the engine original, I would just like it to run better than it does now. The engine does have an automatic behind it. Thanks for the help. :TU:

Clint, it is already not original if it is a skylark with a 455. 71 carbs are visually identical to 70. But look for the 70 if you like. Just find someone good to rebuild it and make sure they re-bush the throttle plates.

If you are not modifying the engine for performance, find the correct 750 cfm 1970 7040240 and leave the 800 cfm 71-up carbs for the performance guys...
You would never feel the difference between the two anyway.

My engine has a few mods to it. It has an Edelbrock Performer intake, a Comp Cams 268H cam, and an HEI distributor with Accel parts. I did not do any of these mods. I'm not really interested in a performance engine as this car will most likely just be a driver. I will probably go with the best deal I can find on a new carb, but it will probably be a couple of weeks before I can buy one. Anyway, thanks for all the help guys. :TU:
