I'm going to put my transmission back in my 72 Skylark tomorrow morning. When we were taking out the trans. My friend kept saying disconnect the passing gear cable from the carb to the trans. I told him that it was not on the carb, but it was inside the car connected to the gas pedal. I was not sure how to get the cable out, so he disconnected it from the trans side. I know it is going to be hard to reconnect that way. Should I disconnect the cable from the inside of the car? if so how do I do that? I saw that the cable was inside a rubber gromet. Please let me know if you can help. I don't want to spend an hour figuring it out,
    Thanks,
    Bob

    GStage1 Always looking for parts!

Cable goes to the gas pedal and is held in place with a black grommet. Slide the grommet from the gas pedal and then you can side the cable through the slot in the grommet and then pass it through the hole in the gas pedal. Pinch/squeeze the tabs above the gas pedal that holds the cable sleeve to the firewall and move the cable to the engine side of the firewall. That is all there is to it.

This doesn't address how to install the cable on the transmission, though, and that's the tough part....took me about two frustrating hours to jam my arms in there last time... but that was with headers

Well, My partner gave me the run around on the trans. He never picked it up.

I did see how the cable comes out the grommet. Just remove the clip around the cable.

Chris, That is what I was thinking it would take me for ever to connect that end of the cable.

    Thanks,
    Bob

    Bob,
Here's some pics to help you out. The first is the detent cable at the trans. One bolt, pull the cable sleeve from the trans, and you will see an eyelet, that hooks on to a link coming out of the case. The second picture is the cable routing. The third picture shows the cable rod end at the gas pedal with the clip.

    Thanks :TU:

The car is over at my friends house about 45 minutes away. I showed him how to remove the clip from the cable.

Looks like he will be putting the trans back by himself. I wasted a whole day doing almost nothing on Sunday. I am starting to think I should have never started this project with him. I know it does not take 4 weeks to rebuild a trans.

Sorry guys just venting :ball: . Things have not been going well. I do favors for people and I get the shaft :Do No: . I wish I lived closer to some real Buick people.

Couldn't be that bad, Bob. It's just a car. I know it's hard to think that way, but trust me- it's just a car. if I didn't remind myself of that often, I'd be afraid to pull the thing out of storage and drive a block, let alone 8 thousand miles a year. Constant work. But it's all do-able and you'll get it done :TU:

    Chris,
I am going to concentrate on my cars at home and forget about the car over at his house. I have the title to the car and if I have to I will get it towed over my house. Like you said "It is only a car". That is what I am saying about the parts I am holding for other people. It is only parts!!! The only thing is this stuff is in my way. Two people are holding me up on these parts. One is a member here and the other is my brother in law. I am not rich that I can front money out for people and have them just avoid me. I have made constant phone calls to these people. All of which have a cell phones. They just don't answer. Than when they do they say they are busy and they want me to call them back. That is a bunch of BS. I am at the point that they have not called in so long that I refuse to answer my phone. What do I do ????

I should just sell all the parts and get the car towed home and find a bunch of new car people to hang around with.

Only you can make that decision, Bob. But you gotta do what you gotta do
