Hello to anyone reading, I am slowly but surely trying to restore my 71' Skylark. I am the particular type that cannot stand leaks and imperfections. So.. I decide to pull apart my steering box because it had a small leak. After completely rebuilding it, I resumed installation. However.... upon completion... I torqued down the inspection plate covering the worm gears and cracked one corner. I almost cried. I have tried searching almost everywhere. I can get many gear boxes, however all I need is the plate. If there is anyone out there that can assist me, I would be eternally grateful. I am unsure as to what is interchangeable. I just know that no local junkyards have my car, and the parts depot does not sell just that plate. Being that I have one arm and had successfully rebuilt the gear box, (going against what everyone told me), I had felt a very good sense of accomplishment. But now.... ha ha... ya.. you know. Thanks. Cam
You may want to contact a rebuilder. The best one I know of is in Missouri. Do a search. If they have junked boxes maybe they would have extra covers. I Think it is actually called a side cover. 71 and later used the plain smooth cover. Earlier ones had a big S on them. You may also contact someone stripping a car. You may have to by the hole box. Shipping will be high because of the weight of that anchor. The cover has a date code on it as well if that matters to you.
