ok well i was going to do some tweaking to the q-jet on my car but first i decided to see what year it was. the number on it is 17037241 i searched for it and there was no info available. next, i checked 2 remaining 455s that i have. the next carb read 17056240 that search came up as 1976 455 buick which is what it is on. the next q-jet i looked up was 7042244 that search came back as 1973 buick 350. however, i was looking in back articles of the gsxtra and it gave that code as a 1973 455. and that q-jet is on a 1973 455 that i pulled out of an electra. would they put a 350 q-jet on a 455? or is it really a 455 q-jet? if it is a 350 q-jet can you use a 76 carb for street-strip? (emissions) cody
no matter which quadrajet you use, you should have it professionally done or follow cliff ruggles q-jet book. these carbs suffer from extreemly lean idle/transfer circuits due to emmisions calibrations. also invest the extra money for the ruggles rebuild kit, the extra money is well worth it and cliff is probably one of the smartest carb builder/racers i've talked to. good luck
You want to find a 73 to 76 Qjet from a 455 if you want an 800cfm carb. You can change out the rods and jets to get them to work with your app.
Sorry for the slow reply. I put in 73 size jets. And changed out the secondary metering rods. Put in a high flow needle and seat, and changed up the float bowl plastic to hold more fuel. I took out all of the front choke stuff to open up for more air flow. And changed the secondary vacuum release to release at a lower vacuum amount. In a nutshell, that is all my secrets. Let me know if I can help.
Mark what kind of times have you gotten? My experience with the q jets has been, good for the street and crappy for racing. Lean.
Went 8.20 last weekend at 89mph. Full street, through the muffs, street tires, crappy converter, etc. That converts to mid 12 range at 3000' altitude. Not too bad. We bought a proform 950 to get more cfm, but put the qjet back on today. Runs better, but have some things to get worked out on the proform and it will probably go back on.
Damn! There's that 1/8 mile number again. It doesn't compute. Maybe only running the 1/8 is why your ok. Not enough time to run lean at the top end of the pass?
Maybe. I wish we had a 1/4 mile track to run on. Our car is just getting rolling good at 1/8th mile with the 3.42 gear. All 5 tracks within 200 miles are 1/8th mile. I am having to learn all this 1/8th mile stuff too. It's still fun though, even if I just get to watch. I knew the Qjet was limited on fuel capacity. So I have a holley blue feeding it, and the high flow needle and seat, and the increased capacity in the bowl area.
It sounds like you got it all worked out. I wish you could 1/4 mile that thing!!!!!! I'd love to see what you can run. Isn't there some site out ther where you plug in a few things and it can tell you how it would go in a 1/4 mile?
dont worry about it. i just bought the cliff ruggles q-jet book. some good reading. i got a 110 pump on my car also but its the mallory one. it had no regulator on it or fuel pressure gauge im trying to decide where to put it so its unoticable. i painted the regulator black. it somewhat helps hide it. cody
Dont used a qjet from anything older than a 73 car! Smogger. You can buy a core for 50 anytime (from a 67-71) and spend 300 for pro rebuild and it'll be perfect. If you do it yourself, properly, you are dollars ahead. IMHO.
When you remove the choke stuff, is it tough to start in the morning? My current carb has the coil spring type choke in the intake. Is there a better way to go about this? I ask because I am building a new motor and I wouldn't mind making some changes to that system.
