IF, a BIG IF, that snap ring can be installed in the rear why would there be a need to clean up the face of the block??? Since it's not going to rub anyway. Just another thought. Could be onto something new, never know till it's tried. Tom T.
We need to do some comparison measuring, it may be a chain misalignment issue from the cam shoulder in the wrong spot? If that is the case then the snap ring would gall into the back side of the cam until it is aligned where it wants to be, back in the block groove possibly? A snap ring can be installed easy enough in the rear of the block with a rotary table and a keyway cutter.
I have narrower carbide keyseat cutters that that! Think snap ring, not key! Yes, snap ring is a great idea, as long as nothing is out of alignment, causing the timing gearset to force the cam towards the rear. Could get an eaten snap ring! I think snap ring idea may be an added preventive measure. Tony; Could use type of spacer against blk to check runout, but alignment is where I'm really thinking the problem is. Going to compare a flat tappet cam against this roller for distance from fuel eccentric shoulder to cam shoulder that locates against blk. They should be the exactly same for gearset/chain alignment. Ok, I took advantage of somewhat warm weather this morning and tackled header removal, (those playful center bolts again!), starter, pwr. steering pump, trans mounting bolts, etc. Everything is taken apart, eng. is ready to pull soon. I need to get this eng on a stand for further teardown & inspection. Tired of leaning over the fenders & grill. Guess what.... It's martini time for Mart!
One thing is for certain, I would add that oil line to the dist gear to make dang sure it is protected.
Yup, oil mods up the azzMaybe this will turnout pretty good. The roller sbb cam will be advanced in retrofit, and I might be in a book!
That key cutter was a picture reference I got off of the interwebs and is smaller than it looks. The cutter thickness is supposed to be 1/16" which would be good for a 1/16" thick snap ring.
Mart, your garage is too clean, brightly lit, and roomy LOL! I'm not sure if this has been mentioned, but have you checked your distributor shaft end play? I'm going to theorize here, but if the cam is allowed to walk forward so far, shouldn't the distributor shaft be allowed to move the same amount up and down? Not sure it makes any difference, just curious
^ good point, stock Distributors have around .060 sometimes more of end play, the MSD stuff is alot tighter

Wouldn't that be the thits if the end play was not enough on the distributor and it shoved the cam into the motor. Have you figured out the real cause of the problem? Was it the cam button with not enough end play or something else. That garage is extra clean, and don't spill anything on it! lol

So now you might as well put the comp to 11-12-1 run race gas and be done with it. Make that SP block live up to it's name. Go 12-1 why mess around you have enough cam and you got the 3 so lets ROCK. I can say with having first hand experience riding in the car that it is probably more than likely the fastest N/A street driven pump gas sbb 350 in Michigan already!
