Hey everyone, I have a 86 turbo regal. To be quite honest Im tired of dealing with the turbo and related tunning issues. Im very interested in dropping a 455 in its place. This car is my daily driver but is sitting in the parking lot at work because it died again. The car has an art carr 200r trans. Ive used the search feature but cant find out if the 455 will fit under the stock hood. Does it? If anyone can help me find a running BB for sale im very interested. I need to put this in ASAP as this is my only mode of trans. I live in southern ca and look forward to learning from everyone. Thanks for yout help-Troy
Troy, you've come to the right place. Check out the "sticky" 455/350 swapout FAQ at the top of the Regal forum, it answers a lot of questions. But to quickly answer yours, a 455 will fit under the stock hood.
Troy: Do a search on eBay for 455 in the complete engines section. There is somebody in Redding that is currently selling a running 455.
Oh yeah, a 455 will bolt right up against that 200R4 and you can reuse that tranny crossmember. However you will need to modify the crossmember for dual exhaust.
Troy I agree with Davey (GS464) keep the 200R4 trans, I have one in mine,I also used the rearendand drive shaft, fits right in no mods. In your case no mods need(kinda), just leave all of them in place. But if you want duals you can modify the crossmember, or get a custom crossmember made. Thats what I did, got mine from www.crossmembers.com, or get one from Ice man Products http://www.maliburacing.com/iceman/. I planned on doing this also to my 86 GN, but lots a rust(t-top car) dictated no, so i got a 82 Regal instead. You can still also use the in tank Fuel pump, just get a good adjustable fuel pressure regulator. As for Ignition go a MSD box to fire the points or a HEI. You can still keep the radiator, the electric fan....it will turn on based on eng temp inter face it with the GNs sensor leads to the V8 sending unitor get the over ride switch from Kirbans or someone to have it turn on with ignition. You can also still keep the Alternator just extend the leads. I know theres more just cant remember. Good Choice and good luck with the project :TU:
dont hack up your old engine/wiring as the turbo guys will pay some good money for your motor even worn out. ebay can net some good bucks for those parts also make sure you get the detent cable to the trans adjusted right before you fire up a 455 in there as it can wipe out a good trans if pressures are not right. quick point if your looking for the easiest swap a buick 350 will bolt in with v6 motor mounts and is a weekend job its a v6 with 2 more cyl the 455 requires measuring/drilling for frame pads and leveling engine a 350 trans will swap in easy just cock the crossmember to one side and the right side will only have one bolt in it driveshaft is same so a 350 trans can be used in a pinch if your doing it yourself and dont have the time/experiance a 350 might be a better option for now
ty72 For my 2cents,I would not cut up a turbo car for what you want to do.Buy yourself a nice Regal, buy a motor [455] a trans and a rear end, sell your turbo car and will come out with some money in your wallet.the other way,it willcost you a lot mula and you loose the originality of your turbo Regal.
A fun project I have attached a thread for you to look at the particulars. It is a work of luv and it is the only one like it as far as I know. Go down to #10 post and it will give you a brief description with Pixs. Weekender http://www.v8buick.com/showthread.php?t=107399&highlight=serpentine+belt+system
