The repro rallye wheel may be "lug centric" and not "hub centric". In other words, the wheel may center itself on the studs and not via the center hole. The new wheels may need to be balanced thru the lug nut holes and not thru the center hole. Theres an adapter with 5 studs that fits on the balancer. Any good wheel and tire place will have it. Most aftermarket wheels need to be balanced this way
You are right about the balancing part. The old rallye wheels were lug centric, in other words the rim is centered on the lugs, not the center hole. I went to several different wheel and tire shops around here and no one could understand that the old rallys are centered on the lug nuts and not on the center hole. They all wanted to use the cone on there machines. I finally got fed up and made my own balancer.
Well, after all the help/info/etc. from you guys, I ordered a set of 15X7 rallyes from Summit. They said they will ship in about 2 weeks. Good price too! We'll see what happens.
One of the things I do on a daily basis is repair and calibrate wheel balancers. I can tell you that most balancers are out of calibration to some degree. In addition to having them use the lug nut adapter, tell them to use "fine mode" on their balancer. Instead of rounding off to the nearest .25 ounce, the balancer rounds off to the nearest .10 ounce. If you want to get really crazy, tell them to "match mount" your wheels and tires. Thats when you find the high and low spots of the wheels and tires. Then rotate the tire on the wheel accordingly. Kind of like "dialing in" the wheel to the tire instead of just mounting them any old way. That should get you thrown out of most tire shops in a hurry! Did the same thing as Derek244 yesterday - five new 15X7 wheels from Summit. Said they would be shipped in two weeks. Hope that happens. Don't need them soon, but want to make sure I can still get them.
I ordered mine from Jegs. They were out of stock as well. Im guessing that Wheel Vintiques waits till there are enough orders to justify another production run? Jason
Specialty Wheels= the best I live 3 miles from Toms shop and he made me 2ea 15x8's for the rear and 2ea 15x7's for the front of my 1970 GSX Stage 1. You won't be disapointed. My friend just a block away had Tom make him 4ea 15x7's for his pristine 72 GS. Trust me, you will like the wheels. Tom knows what he is doing. I was his original nightmare on getting the WG back spacing correct. :3gears:
I waited about 4-5 weeks from Sumitt for my wheels,no shipping for me its only a little over a half hour drive :3gears: . I`m getting my G-60`s mounted tommorow[thanks Gstring].They look great with my NOS centers, cant wait till tommorow afternoon to see them with tires on them.I guess I`ll have to post a pic of them
Keith, do you have any updated pics of the progress on your car? That pic is old! :Brow: G-60's....mmmmmmm. I struggled with the thought of G-60's, but ended up with a set of 245/60/15 BFG's for right now. I drive the car alot and did not want to sacrifice handling or ride. BUT, hands down, the G-60's look the best! Post some pics for sure.
This pic if from today around 5pm. The pic is not upside down, the body is o No: . Just picked it up from the blasting shop, entire underside, all int and firewall were blasted. Man my trailer is a mess
Update: Just got a postcard from Summit stating that my order of 15X7 wheels scheduled for Jan 21 has been backordered to Feb 7th. Not a good sign. Hope I get them by April.
Harry, I got the same card! I guess waiting is the name of the game for these wheels. When I called Wheel Vintiques, they said 8,10, or 12 weeks... o No:
Update: My 15 X 7 Buick wheels were ordered from Summit on Jan 8th, with a shipping date of Jan 21st. Just checked the status on their website, and they are showing a backorder to March 30th. This is getting scary. I hope that Wheel Vintiques hasn't decided to stop making Buick rallye wheels.
Guys, call Coker Tire.........mine shipped next day when I ordered them last August. They might have em just sittin there waiting for ya. D.
Looks like several recent posts have been lost from this thread. Anyway, the Coker wheels are much more expensive than Summit's, even if they are from the same manufacturer. Well, my order of five Buick rallye's from Summit is now backordered to April 16th. That's 3 and 1/2 months! I hope that they do come through, as we may not have ANY sources if Wheel Vintiques doesn't resume production.
