This looks like the place! Hello all, I just picked up a 64' Skylark Convertible last week, and really excited about tearing into her. I'm think I'm just going to make her a driver for the first year or so, but who knows what the future will bring. I had been looking for a convertible classic for a while, and the price on this...I could not pass up. I test drove it before I bought, and drove great. To make it respectable, I plan to replace floor pans, and install all new interior (may even spray a quick coat of paint on her before spring). Body will come later. So far I have replaced the voltage regulator, and just purchased a double reservoir master cylinder kit with all new brake lines. Next I will check all wheel cylinders and brake shoes. I think it's got a 300ci, but the previous owner said it was a 340. Any easy ways to check? It does have aluminum heads. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Ron
The engine should be a 300 with aluminum heads and intake. It doesnt happen to have a 4 bbl carb does it? Nice car! I bought mine and it had a chevy 350 in it so I had to yank that and put in a 455!!!
Thanks for the reply guys. 2 bl carb. And Midnight blue would be AWESOME :beers2: , but that would take lots of body work time, so for now, I'm stickin with white (at least for the first year or so). And I can definitely see a 455 coming my way sometime..... Still trying to figure out the difference between the 300 and 340. I know it came with a 300, but the previous owner is pretty sure it's a 340.
Hey, I seen that car on Craigs List in Ohio. I almost called on that one. The price was real low for that car. You got a great deal on that one I'm sure. Brian
Welcome. Consider yourself lucky Brian didn't grab it!! He has a problem. Looks to me like 64's and 65's are taking over the board lately!!! Sweet ride.
Yes sir, that was the one. I didn't figure I could go wrong at that price. And it even drives good. Not to mention that 64/65 is the best body style out there :beers2: Thanks for not gobbling it up Brian. It was pretty far out in the middle of no where.
Ron, See if you can find the engine codes and then check here to identify them: http://www.teambuick.com/index.php?page=reference
I've read that thread a few times, but still having trouble locating the numbers on the block. They are not on the right front below the head, or anywhere that I can tell on the front....o No:
Have you checked the casting number? http://www.teambuick.com/forums/view.php?pg=casting_numbers_small_block I know on a big block it is all the way at the back of the motor, where it hooks to the tranny. You have to practically crawl into the car and look in the back middle of the engine where it goes into the firewall to see it. Not sure if its in the same place on a small block? Both of my small block engines are in storage, but if you haven't found it by this weekend I can check.
If u can post some pix of the engine, we should be able to tell by looking at it. The 340 was made for 66 and 67 only.
Ron, You said it has the aluminum heads which would indicate the original 300 engine that it came with provided it hasn't been replaced with another 1964 300. 1964 was the only year that the 300 cu.in. engine had those heads. It appears to have solid quarter panels which is half the battle. Garry
Solid yes, but not necessarily solid metal o No: It's all good. I knew what I was getting when I bought it. I've already purchased lots of stuff..and got lots more to go :TU: Ron
The engine info is behind the power steering pump bracket. You'll have to pull it off to get to the info...and use some engine cleaner on a rag to make it visible. If it's original, the number will have the VIN as part of it. Nice car!
