I just got the flyer for the 2008 psmcdr at stanton. Under the ignition section it states "no ignition boxes". What exactly does this mean? And this is a change is it not? NO msd? No digital msd? No mopar electronic boxes??

Does this mean no Pertonix set up either?

According to Dan, it means under cap systems like Pertronics, Crane etc.

I still run points, no after market ignition box.:Do No:

So my Pertronix will NOT be legal?

The way I was reading it and according to the website, pertronix will be allowed. http://www.geocities.com/psmcdr/rules.html I will go home tonight and try to scan the mailing and see if there is a difference. If so, the rules on the website need to reflect the mailing and we need to have a date of change on the website.

Mr. Stefina, Just curious, do you use a rev limiter on either of your cars?

    No.

Or I should say, right foot.

Maybe I should use one...I know they are available for stock point systems.

Sorry Seth, earlier when I listed under cap stuff, I should have said legal

No problem Brian.I am getting the bee ready for its first PS outing at Stanton.I didn't want to show up with the wrong junk. The #'s motor is safely tucked under the work bench and the new motor is up and running.Just need to fix the rust in the quarters, rebuild the front end,and add my drive shaft loop.Hopefully won't make a fool of myself with the 4 -speed LOL!

don't worry Seth, I'm there with a 4sp car too. haven't figured out how to launch it yet.
I read the rules as no MSD-type stuff. I know of many cars running pertronix or crane xr-i

Has anyone compared numbers with a point system an say the pertronix set up? I`m just wondering how much of a improvment one would get with the pertronix or other under the cap set up`s.

I did.71 GTO original distributor with a new set of points, then changed distributor to one with pertronix, ran exactly the same.

Pertronix is merely a replacement for points. No magic pixie dust. The only reasons to expect an improvement over points is if 1/ your points were out of adjustment, or 2/ the octagonal "cam" which opens and closes the points is worn.

I've never heard anyone claim improvements with an MSD either, other than improving idle quality with a rich mixture. Once you get above mid-level RPMs, the MSD only delivers one spark. I've always been of the opinion that one good spark (properly timed) is all you need. Pouring more energy or more sparks into an already ignited mixture won't do anything.

Anyone care to tell me I'm all wet and back it up with timeslips? I'm all ears.

We tested the Pertronix vs Points on the dyno. With properly adjusted points the numbers for Power and Torque, were the same.

The real advantage of the undercap Pertronix style unit is not having to constantly maintain it.It does not wear and fall out of adjustment as points do. Install it and forget it.

The Crane style unit that fits under the cap ,has built in rev limiting capability ,which newer Pertronixs', may have now.The earlier units did not.

You will need to ask Steve Austin(The Six Million Dollar Man), to train his bionic eye on the Crane unit ,to set the rev. limiter though.

I agree on the crane xri rev limiter!! I have used both the crane and the pertronics and have seen no difference in the two, other than the crane is alot cheaper

I looked at a '63 Merc rag top a few years ago.....anyway, the hood came open and I said..."No factory ignition huh?"

The guy said "Yea it was running rich so I put on the MSD, it didn't help"

I guess it wouldn't help, there were puddles of fuel on the intake.
