What do you think. Nonsense or true? Makes your license plate too shiney to photograph? Got this in a spam email, but am not so sure what to think.

Hey, we've got classic cars and like to make everything shiney, right?

Photo ticketing should be illegal. I have a Right to know when I am being monitored by authorities, it's the same reason they need a warrant to tap a phone line or that a Company must tell you your conversation may be recorded for training purposes. Utter nonsense. The cameras need to be clearly marked and known to the public in the same manner and they are not.

I know they do that crap in Canada

 Not 1st hand knowledge though. It is possible to read your plate from a sat in space, so I'm sure they will still be able to read it from 20'. If it did mess up the photo enough, they would upgrade their equipment. Problem solved. :pp

It's a quick hit for cash for the city or town that has it. Here is the catch. You run through a red light or yellow :Brow: and it snaps your plates. With NYC they mail you the fine and photo of your car and a close up of the plate. Now the fine is $55. You pay it and no points. Can't hit the owner of the vehicle with points because you cannot prove who was driving. So you get a ticket in the mail and say screw it I'm fighting it. Now you get your court date. The first thing the judge says to you is, who was driving, because it is the driver that has to fight it as he/she was in charge of the vehicle during the "alledged" infraction.

So you say you were driving. The judge or some rep for the red light program states how this camara system is 9999999999999999.99% correct all the time and that it was maintained properly. The judge looks at you after you claim you it was yellow and says guilty. The fine now will be about double and you now have 3 points on your license. Why the points? Because they now have an admitting driver to the infraction and treat it the same as if a cop saw the infraction and wrote the ticket.

It's a real catch 22. I just laughed at seeing my 150,000 mile Olds beater smack in the the intersection with a glaring red light above. I considered it a $55 portrait, next time I'll hold up my finger

I will have to try that shinny plate deal. I was told it does work. You see with the camara being some 20 feet away and about 20 feet up the shot is on a downward angle. With a shinny plate it may reflect the flash and with a sunny day cause too much glare off the plate to read the plate. In NYS it is illegal to have any type of covers clear, smoked, even those wide license plate frames on your car. It's fall under those BS summones that a pee brain can write you. With spraying the plate, that may be the ticket...no pun intended.
It may be worth a try.

Two points one from a law enforcement view. Tapping your phone the police, FBI etc must present first to a judge that they have probable cause that you are a bad guy doing bad things that they are hunting for, and they have to show this to the judge. The judge signs the subpoena and along with the request the police give that subpoena to your phone company, or electric company, cable company or EZ Pass etc. They then can aquire your records. With the phone in most cases the subpoena only gives the authority a 30 day phone tapping. And they have to discontinue listening if the conversation is not related to what they are looking for. After the 30 day hit the phone company then alerts you that your phone was tapped. On long term surveillance the police have to go back to the same judge for an extension of the 30 day period, and again they must prove it to the judge. They then alert the phone company who then does NOT let you know after the original 30 day period.

The above has to be followed strictly otherwise one screw up by the police of improperly listening etc. and the entire warrant for the phone tap is thrown out of court along with all of the "good" evidence with it.

With yor second point, in NYC the camaras are clearly marked and also there are signs at the intersection. So as you run the light and see the flash you look up and can read the sign :pp

it seems pretty soon there will cameras pointed at our front doors and we will be monitored every where we go. these cameras are not going to stop the morons of the world from endangering us, human error is not going to go away thanks to these cameras. people will still spill coffee on there lap and look away from the road for a second, people will still take a chance running yellow lights and some people have connections and/or money so they feel they will get away with it any way. i understand why some think its a good idea i got five kids and i want the roads safe for them but i just dont think good people will stop making mistakes or bad people will stop doing bad things thanks to cameras. hey i'm just dumb white trash what do i know. :)

What fun would that be? :Do No:

Do these cameras solely rely on front plates?

I know in WA we're required to have front plates unless we've got a collector's vehicle license. Right now my Skylark has no front plate. Eventually I'll put some sort of custom plate up front, like the black plate with the big red "GS" that I had on my 71 GS455

Some states don't require front plates.

What I have heard about (haven't seen yet) is that E-Zpass is supposed to be mailing tickers to speeders. The system has the ability to calculate how fast you traveled from the time you got on the highway till you exit at the booth. If you cover that distance in greater than 65 mph, you would qualify for a speeding ticket.
This could be one of those rumors, but who knows. What next? Will they charge the speeding ticket to your E-Zpass account.

    My 2 cents,
    Mark

I know that in Delaware, we don't have front plates, the cameras take a shot of the rear plate as you go through the intersection. We do not have signs announcing where the intersections are, but they are listed in the local paper when they are installed. ...also, our fine is $75 per infraction!

Well, Rick, that's just an example. I'm not saying that legally, the exact same bit of Law applies.

But as far as I know, I still have a Right to know when I am being monitored by authorities. In NYC they may do it that way, but I know that it isn't the same everywhere, and wasn't like that the last time photo radar reared it's ugly head.

It's like the tattletale chip they want to put into cars, the one that automatically can ticket you. Big Brother is watching too, too much and too often. So they have a little sign that identifyies the unit...the last time they tried this in Texas, those photo radar units got shot with shotguns....which I can't disagree with. Photo radar is wrong, and the reason is always "public safety" which is a laugh..how about teaching people to drive? Oh, that's expensive, is the answer...well, well, it's not about safety, it's about money

The whole thing makes me sick and ashamed

Yes, the photoblocker stuff works, I've seen videos of it working (denver police tested it and proved it worked).

There are a couple points though:

#1. If you go through a red light, you deserve the ticket. People are killed that way.
#2. No camera should be setup to catch people speeding. Speeding is relevant to the situation.

Well, let's see now...you got me thinkin'....
I can only hope you're not doing any of the following:
Driving on city streets/Interstates where there may be (undisclosed) radar.
Walking down a sidewalk with no posted warning, 'Police may patrol this area'
Shopping at a mall or convenience store with no 'camera signs' every few feet
Eating at restaurants void of signs: 'Plain-clothes officers eat here'
Visiting banks/ATM's with no surveillance 'warnings'

We can't be too wary. I'm thankful for living in a system based on laws...(as long as they are enforced only in a manner which suits me.)

I have no problem with red lite cameras...........we have too many morons around here who run red lites as a hobby. Every time I stop at an intersection on yellow I damn near get rear ended by the a**hole behind me. My only beef is that the yellow lites are inconsistent, some are just simply too short. If they put cameras here, they should make the yellow 1 or 2 seconds longer.........especially in the slippery weather when you can't stop too quickly. :bglasses:

I may have missed it in someone elses comments, but I'll state it here anyway. Not only must the plate show up, but your face must be visible for a positive ID. So if you think you're gonna blow some red lights get your O.J. mask on - maybe that way we can finally get that guy for something.

Up here in B.C. we used to have photo radar, but that was discontinued due to it's ineffectiveness. Basically, the vans would be set up in the same spot all the time and could easily be spotted.

We also have red light cameras set up at most busy intersections around the City, however, they only have a few cameras that they rotate between intersections. Even though there may not be a camera in the housing, the flash goes off so you wait and wonder for a few weeks. The cameras take two pics, one of you BEFORE your in the intersection that show the rear license plate of the car and the red light, and the second of you INSIDE the intersection showing the license plate and the red light. If you go through on the yellow, it's not triggered, the light has to be red before you enter.

What's important though is that receiving a ticket in the mail is merely an "invitation to pay". You are not required to pay any ticket until it is delivered to you personally. The reason photo radar failed up here is nobody paid their fines, and the government wasn't chasing after enough people. The cost of the program was much higher than the revenues so they scrapped it. Bottom line is don't pay until you are served with a ticket personally.

That reminds me of that one story. Cops sent photos+ticket, guy sent back picture of money, cops sent back pictures of handcuffs.
