Just got the engine back together (new t-chain and degree). Now after I have it all hooked up, it cranks but no spark...

Im running a MSD 6AL, Ignition Man MSD trigger, Accell 8.8 wires and napa coil (something 52) I think...:Dou:

Im getting 4.5v to the MSD trigger, 12.8 at the battery, the 6AL is hooked directly to the + & - on the batt, no spark out of the coil, and my only help is my 5yr old.

It ran 2 weeks ago, but not now, Im lost:Do No: ???

    Any ideas???

OK went to MSD tech support, no spark when removing the jumper, and I'm getting 11.51 volts from the keyed power source... Time for a new coil and retest...:af: This car is really starting to P!$$ ME OFF!!! :ball:

If anyone has more input or experience please feel free to jump in!!!

    Mike,
To test the MSD box, Disconnect the coil wire at the distributor cap, and position it near a ground. Then disconnect the green/violet connection at the distributor. With the ignition switch in the run position, short the green to the violet(on the box end of the connector) Everytime you break the short, you should see several sparks at the coil wire. This is the way MSD recommends testing the box. If you get sparks, the box is working. You may have a problem with the magnetic pick up. You can then pull the distributor, connect it to the box, and spin it. You should see the sparks at the coil wire. If not, the problem is in the distributor.

I fried an Accel coil in less than an hour of run time. Went with the chrome MSD 8200 coil, never had another problem.

OK.. it a napa coil, pn IC 12... Trigger resistance is 198 ohms... Not good according to MSD, but still no spark when doing above test... And Im not sure if Dave uses MSD triggers or ford (for somereason that sounds falmilular)... So readings could be off... A new coil is the next step, read, cheapest and fastest... I deploy to Iraq in less than a month and in that time I'm reporting to Camp Pen. for training, learning a new sniper rifle, finishing baseboards, and having a baby!!!

:Dou: :Dou: :Dou: ... Got a new coil and started to pull the old one out and, wait why is there this black wire flopping around the coil... Re crimped it and hit the key and ....

BOOM!!!! Nice back fire thru the open headers... Almost scared the wife into labor:grin: .

Hit the key again and it started up, but open headers at 9 at night, :Brow:  :Brow: ... ME LIKE LOTS!!! But neighbors no likey...

    So there is always tomorrow...

A healthy backfire is good. It tells me that you now have spark. Now to the timing aspect. It is likely that the distributor is off time with relation to the engine, or that the cam is off time. Only you know what to look for there. If you are sure of the cam, try re-orienting the dist, using the timing marks. Let us know...
