What does it mean. The engine runs smooth, no knocks or ticks, no rattles. Only thing, when in park, if I rev the engine , as the engine comes down back to idle, it makes a noise like a soft rattle and then back at idle its quiet again. It never makes this noise when driving. What can it be ? The car never smokes, not at start up, not ever, not a bit. What is the sound, and how can I make it go away? Thanks, Gary P.S. Buick always starts now, no problems, not even on rainy mornings. Starts right up, one crank and Vrooom!! Anybody got a NOS secondary choke pulloff ? part number 7040371
Get under it. Might be the fan hitting the shroud, or one of the belts slapping something? Flywheel hitting the dust cover? Jack it up and put it on stands, get under it with a creeper you will find it. Good Luck.
Open up your valve covers and check for rocker arm wear (you need to spend about an hour per side to remove each). If there is slight wear, at certain RPM you will hear noise. They are cheap and easy to replace. Does it make the same noise at about 40 MPH when you let off the gas? (roll down your window and turn off the radio!!) If it does, this is definately the case... Gary, you may also want to check everything from the exhaust manifolds back. I've found many rattles in exhaust systems over the years and for some reason o No: some of them seem to happen while the car is in neutral and they go away when the car is in gear. :TU:
noise Gary, I would ck these things. Fan belt "whip". The fan clutch.[with the engine off, take your hand and grab a fan blade and gently push and pull it back and forth from the front to the back of the vehicle. look for slack in the fan clutch or a broken water pump shaft] The outer ring on the harmonic balancer. If the engine has one the "butterfly valve" in the exaust manifold. A loose baffle in the mufflers. If the car has the original head pipes in the exaust system, they are a pipe inside a pipe and can sometimes burn a hole in the inner pipe and get a piece of metal loose and flopping around inside. Last, check for loose bolts around the bell housing.
At least it happens in park, every time I look for a noise it's got to be in gear to find it. I read a story not too long ago, (Possibly here?) about some nimrod that held on underneath a moving vehicle to find a noise and got mauled. Tom
recently had this problem with my turbo regal, it made the sound in neutral too, got real bad, thought it was a rod knock, a friend of mine suggested torque convertor bolts, and tada no more noise, its easy to check, id start there before tearing into a huge project josh
