You may be correct that they were painted. I am not up on 65 Larks. But the ones on say Olds ( we have a 66 442 ) or Chevelles of the same time frame were not painted silver. They were plated or stainless steel and that type is remade as follow: http://www.chevelle.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=54_171 The one you show looks like a base model without a day/night feature. It it was the same as an Olds mirror of he same era I would say someone spray painted the backside because the plating failed.
