    Hey all,

Hope it's cool that I hang with you in here. While I do not have a Buick vehicle, I am a proud owner of a 1969 Jeep Wagoneer with the stock Buick 350 (99k original miles). I was hoping to pick the posting archives and some member brains on the care of this great engine. I've attached a pic of the heart of "Duncan" for those who care to view.
I've been a member here for a few months, but thought it would be cool say hey. If there are any other Wagoneer owners on here with this great Buick engine, gimmie a shout.

    Peace and chicken grease,

    Matthew

    Hey Patrick,
Thanks for the post. Yeah, I really like these old wagoneers for a lot of reasons. American metal, 4WD and engines that can breath (can you say smog and cat exempt :D). Plus the body lines and style of the vehicles of days of old are just too cool! Plus, with duel bench seats, I could live out of this thing.

I really like the fact that Jeep utilized Buick when they were transitioning from the 327 to the 360.

Duncan aint no nancy-boy ride though. He's gonna need some things. I like the potential of the Buick 350. Can be a little muscle with some stump pulling power and still get decent milage for a war wagon.
As for how clean the engine is, I can't take credit for that. Previous owner kept him pretty sharp. I'm just maintaining. I've attached a pic of him. I know he aint pretty, but he's a work in progress. I've had him about 5 months and only really get to work on him on saturdays.

    Thank for the welcome all,

meanmotor74: Well, I do have some ideas. But I need to think them through. I think I'm in a different area than most of you fine Buick car folk. I'm looking for some speed, but let's face it, this is a 4WD wagon. I'm gonna lean more towards the low end torque side than the street rod. I guess I'm looking for a meld of both. I've decided on the Holly Truck Avenger (670 cfm) for sure. I'm just not sure which intake to go with. TA Performance or the Poston. Both appear to be equal. Cam and other internal components will need to be determined based on how I want to utilize HP/Torque split. I would like to keep fuel efficiency in consideration as well (going to be mostly used for transporting older folks and band gear to church).

Anyone with comments, suggestions, site sources...please feel free to share.

Thanks to you all in advance for sharing any experience and knowledge.

    Matthew

Well the good news is that the Buicks main advantage is its ability to make torque and at low rpms! Great for massive Buicks and 4wd wagons. Bad news is that I don't think that Holly might not work. It is too small for that engine. The Rochester 4 bbls that came on Buick 350s was around 750 cfm. "The Mixing Shop" forum on this board would be a good place to start when it comes to carbs. That and the forum "Small Block Tech" might help you in getting more power outta that tree fitty. Hope ya find what your looking for.

    Hey Patrick,

Thanks for the info on the carb. I know there is a 770cfm Truck Avenger as well, but the TA Performance site note that the Truck avenger is a fit for the 350 stage 1 intake. I will be hanging out at the "mixing shop". Thanks for the direction in which to head.

on another note...I'm very interested in the Rhodes series "bleed-down" lifters for a better blend of torque and HP that I am looking for out of this 350.

Well, I have much learning to do. So I'm a looking forward to hearing about and reading through this sites member input. Then I can get to work putting some gashes in my knuckles.

    Blessings,
    Matthew

Added another pic here. I bought this stuff called "rust stop" and I'm slowly coating the whole body inside and out. Greatly needed for the snowy winters and humid summers here in NY. Otherwise, Duncan will melt like a metal snowman. You can see where I coated the roof to start (contingent upon weather for application).

    What's up Matt?

Where in Queens are you? If you haven't noticed already there is quite a number of buick guys from the NYC/Long Island area on here. I think I am one of two people on this board who live in flushing, There is atleast one guy from astoria (with a wicked black 1967 GS) and I know a few more guys who aren't on the board who live in bayside.

That is a bitchin wagoneer, I always wanted the 2-door cherokee version of one of those but had to settle for the smaller cherokee and then a wrangler. The way I see it is rather than build up the 350 and potentially hurt the original motor (plus dump a lot of money into a motor that isn't worth much) you shoudl find a 455 and bolt that badboy between the fenders. buick 455's aren't escpially hard to come by (compared to say pontiac 455s) and you would probably spend for one what you would put into the 350 anyway. Plus it would increase your towing capacity. just my 2cents.

    Hey Geeto,
Yeah, I saw that there are a couple of folks here in L.I. I get to the island as often as I can to get in some surf time (originally a southern californian). Been here in NY over 2 years. I'm in Middle Village. I'm fairly familiar with Flushing, our church use to hold services at a nursing home over in Flushing.
I have seen some really nice rides around Queens. Kinda sad that they have to park those beautiful rides in the garage during the winters.

Thanks for the thoughts on the engine swap. I'll keep that in mind. I am very limited on funds, so it's gonna be a gradual buildup.

    Hey Don,
Yeah, I can see that there are a lot of friendly and well informed members here. I'm sure I will gain some insight and hopefully some buddies to help with projects. An extra pair of hands, experience and some brains cells always go a long way. I'm fairly new to working on cars (anything more than changing oil or brakes), so I know I can learn a lot from everyone in here. Even if it's what not to do.

    Blessings,
    Matthew
