okay it's started, with 100,000 miles scince last rebuild, when I start the engine it burns a very small amount of oil, more like a puff. then it runs fine no burning. I'm guessing it is the valves letting a little oil through. anyone have a guess or know what it could be. the engine is running real strong(best it has ever been)
I'm going to look at the valvetran this week end.

Is it a puff of BLUE smoke? or is it a white-ish grey? That makes adifference in what it would be. My LeSabre blew a puff of smoke when I started it up, but I don't think it was oil related. I think the carb that was on it (edelbrock POS) was the problem. I put a qjet on it and it cleared up. I had always thought it was puffing smoke until I swapped carbs.:Do No:

If it is a light puff of blue smoke, you may consider switching to a heavier weight oil. I know that when my dad switched to 20W-50 in his Jeep, it stopped smoking and the lifter noise went away.

    leak down

sounds like oil is leaking past the valve seals into the cylinders .
it gets burned off when the engine starts .

    white puff or blue puff

if its just white than its prolly just a light flooding thing that goes on no biggie. try not to pump the gas before you start it and see if you notice it.

if its a a bluish tint its oil burning. but its generaly just a little bit of oil leaking past a valve seal when it sists but again isnt that big a deal.

what is the time frame that the car is turned off and you notice this?

most cars have a puff of some kind out the back when you start them. yes even new bmw's and the like.

well it is white smoke with a tinge of blue, I'll try adjusting the carb. i'll also look at the seals on the valves

Don't bother touching the carb, excessive rich or flooding conditions cause black smoke, not white. White is water in combustion chamber. Sounds like you just have a little oil sliding down the valve stems. This is fairly common for a Buick engine.
