Over the weekend I dropped my engine back in the car and as I started it up I noticed an oil leak coming from the back end of the block. Is there any chance that there might be a plug or something that I might have over looked.

Could it be the rear main seal?
What one are you currently using?
    Rope or two piece neoprene?

Its coming from the rear of the engine between the block and tranny. For the timing cover I'm using rope.

Its most likely your rear main seal, but it could also be from the oil pan if you took that off. I say that because the same thing happened to me after dropping mine back in and it looks like my oil pan gasket area is wetter then the rear main area.

The only problem is that I didnt prime the motor till it was back in the car and the oil pan gasket was put on months ago.

If it is the rear seal will I have to pull the motor or can I just drop the oil pan

Maybe the oil pan gasket dried out if there was no oil in it after it was put on? I'd check the oil pan first, easier.

Man, there seems to be a rash of leaking seals lately...

You can get the pan off by pulling the two motor mount bolts (1 per side) and putting a jack under the front pulley, raising the engine.

If you've got a 350, use the Ford 460 neoprene rear main seal.

I take it this is a new engine? Or at least a new rear seal? How bad is the leak? Is it like a faucet drip or you just see a drop off the inspection cover? If its just a small leak, the rope seal may need to swell up. Seals tend to leak when they're dry. Once the oil hits them and they begin to break in again, they will leak. I experienced the same thing with my engine. Once I started driving it, the leak disappeared. Just dont jump the gun on this one. Might save you alot of un needed work

But did you add anything to the gasket or was it just dry gasket between dry metal?
