Well, Last friday evening I took a 2 hour drive with my '70 to Huntington WV., and met the original owner of my car. He was quite happy to see the ole car back in one piece and on the road again. He said the car had somewhat of a local reputation, but he never expected to see the car together again, because the gentleman that bought the car off of him (1982), merely bought it for the engine. A friend of mine purchased the car from the second owner when he had a " '70 Stage 1, GSX" advertised (1984). After purchasing the "X", he was informed that he got the "parts car" with it. He walked around the back of the garage to see a silver-mist, Stage 1, sans engine and transmission. Upon returning home and checking out parts, he realized he had actually purchased an all no's matching '70 Stage1, and a GSX missing the drivetrain. At this time he decided to sell the white, '70 GSX and keep the "project". After holding the car for several years, and being the high-pressure salesman he is, he talked me into purchasing this car off of him in 1996, and beginning the task of a full frame off restoration, (finished in 2003). Now I am fortunate enough to have a fully restored piece of Musclecar history. The actual mileage of 65k was verified by the original owner, (already documented via. title search) Photos of happy original owner to follow soon.... John
Cool story John! How ironic that the silver mist's motor was placed in the GSX and both were offered at the time of sale. ...how lucky can you get :bglasses: :TU:
engine......... Actually, You have to remember that building buick engines in the early '80's was still in its "infancy" if you will. He had the machine work done on the block, and had it bored +.020", but it was still unassembled and lying in the trunk of the GSX. Tim and I think that maybe the cost of pistons at that time scared him off of finishing the project. John
GSX If I remember correctly, I believe Dave Kleiner purchased the "X" for either himself, or a customer.....I am not sure.
John,That is a cool story, glad you posted it! Love your car by the way. I have a close friend who lives in Huntington and it looks like you were at a cruise in or car show when you took the picture;if someone was telling you about thier friend in Ky. who is crazy about Buicks at the show good chances are that was my friend telling you about me.
Thank you very much. There was a cruise-in advertised at the local Autozone, so I decided to go ahead and contact the original owner and try to hook up with him in Huntington. I actually heard of a couple of buick nuts in the area. I can tell you that the buick was a hit. There was another GS at the C.I.. I believe it was a '71 GS 350.
John, that's really neat. I own a '64 Skylark factory 4-bbl, 4-sp, posi with the 11:1 compression 355 Wildcat v-8. When I contacted the original owner listed on the protecto plate in San Leandro Ca. he sent me pics of himself standing beside the car the day he bought it back in '64. I told him if he ever came up to N.H. I'd let him take the car for a day and just cruise the area. The car has 150k. and he was amazed that the current pics I sent him the car looks as good as the day he picked it up! I also own 2- '65 GS's, a '65 Sky, a '62 sky and a '64 Riv with 48k. The '62 and the Riv are for sale but the others aren't. Soon as I can figure out how to post them on the site I'm going to list them. Good luck with your GS, Dick.
Re: Long lost friends John, that really is an awesome story. One very worthy of the GSXtra or Muscle Machines, or both. Stories like these are great.
