I'm geting ready to start painting various pieces and the block. What is the correct red to use ?Was the Star Wars air cleaners painted the same colour red as the motors? o No:
Thanks Jim,thats a great help. Dave you are correct the air cleaners were molded red,but mine needs freshening up.I've seen some on the board that have been painted and want to get the colour close to the original.
The ones I have seen do not quite match the engine, but then they are almost 40 years old and the engine paint is fresh... Can't say how well they matched in 1967.
Jim, I'm on my first can of Duplicolor DH 1608.....The result isn't very glossy, it's actually closer to a flat gloss-wise- is that what you've gotten as well?
I would not descibe it that way. Everybody uses that paint. JW paints all his engines with it. http://www.v8buick.com/showthread.php?t=106567&highlight=duplicolor It will change color a little with the first application of heat.
I too have found it to not have a gloss. Other folks I know who have used it used a high temp clear gloss over it. I use the Dupli Color Ford Red. Very nearly the same color, and it is full gloss. May not be as heat resistant, but I can live with it.
Duplicolor brake caliper red also very close with good heat resistance and maybe a little more gloss. I do not think original engines had much of a shine but 35 years later there is no standard to go by. I did try the Buick red from CARS and it was salmon pink??? Have several cans left for free. Anyone want it??
I think JW hasd Dennis Manner confirm that the Duplicolor 1608 is about right. It is what was used for the Ccncours GSX we have shown in the sticky and I would not say that it is flat in sheen.
Intake manifold is Duplicolor 1608 Jim mentioned. Was painted several 6 months ago and has about 500 miles on it. Has about right shine I think.
Engine block is Plasti-Kote red brake caliper paint.(I said Duplicor before) was painted two years ago and has several thousand miles on it. Still has sheen. I had intake with other color on it and you could not see the difference.
Buick RED Bob, Time for painting, EH? Krylon 2114 BUICK RED Hi Heat is the paint for your iron. Order it from your local parts store (Krylon dealer) Crank picked up today, packaging on Saturday and Clipper Monday? Call me :TU: MarkO
Krylon Buick red rated 300-500 degrees I think. Plasti-Kote Brake caliper rated 900 degrees. Duplicolor #1608 with ceramic rated at 1200 degrees. Just food for thought.
good point My engine was primed by the machine shop with some super high heat primer, and the KRYLON still looks new after 15 years. The only area it has failed is on the heads between the exhaust. Does the PlastiKote hold up at that location? Doesn't the ceramic paint need to be bake cured? I did that to my headers and that stuff works!!!! But I kild baked the cure.
CARS Buick Red is pink, as you have discovered. Avoid it like the plague!!! I have no first hand knowlede, but I have cleaned grunge off of original engines, and they were pretty glossy after 30+ years. I would bet these cars had glossy engines from the factory, and also that the original paint burned off every bit as quickly as any new engine paint.
Is this problem with the heads the same for the intake ? I painted my valve covers CARS Buick red about 700 miles ago and they look great . The can of paint has been on the garage shelf for maybe 8-10 years. Maybe they have a new supplier ? Anyway , intake needs to be done and looking for solution. Thanks !
