    Here's a stupid question, but what the hell....or more of a warning.

    Bought a 73 riv many years ago, that while it ran fine for awhile, there was a noticible noise in the rearend and it turns out it sat so long in one spot before being put on the road again that the gears in the differential were pitted from rust, on the top of course. I replaced that rearend at some point.

    Turns out in Maine however that junkyards are required to drain all fluids out of rearends etc before storing them in a junkyard. If this is the case and also thinking about no fluid, how much faith can you have in getting a rearend etc for a late model car that's worth a damn.

    If you don't lube it you lose it right.

    Depends on length of storage. I have some rear axles here with no oil in them and they don't have any rust because there is enough gear oil on them to prevent surface rust. With our humidity, I was surprised. I "think" you can get new gears for the Riv rear axle.
